God Emperor of Dune Explained: Plot Summary and Ending

The full story of Frank Herbert's fourth Dune novel, from Siona's raid on the Citadel to Leto II's fall from the bridge over the Idaho River, and what the ending means for the Golden Path.

By Joe Garratt

God Emperor of Dune is the fourth Dune novel, published by Frank Herbert in 1981. It jumps about 3,500 years past Children of Dune to the last months of Leto Atreides II, who has spent those millennia becoming a sandworm and ruling the known universe as its living god. Much of the book is talk: Leto arguing with the people who want him dead, and dictating his journals. This page covers the whole plot and the ending, so it contains full spoilers. (God Emperor of Dune)

Before the story begins#

At the end of Children of Dune, the nine-year-old Leto covered his body in sandtrout, the larval form of the sandworm, and took the throne from his aunt Alia Atreides. The living skin gave him enormous strength and a lifespan of thousands of years, at the cost of slowly turning him into a worm. He took the throne to walk the path his father Paul Atreides saw but refused. (Children of Dune)

By the time this book opens, Arrakis is green farmland with rivers and forests. Only one desert remains, the Sareer, kept as Leto's private reserve, and the native sandworms are gone. The Fremen have been reduced to Museum Fremen who act out the old customs for visitors. Leto controls the empire's entire supply of melange, so the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit and the Bene Tleilax all depend on him. His army is the Fish Speakers, an all-female force that worships him. And for centuries he has bought a steady stream of Duncan Idaho gholas from the Tleilaxu to command his guard. Some of them have tried to kill him. (God Emperor of Dune)

The theft from the Citadel#

The book opens with a raid. Siona Atreides, daughter of Leto's majordomo Moneo, leads a band of young rebels into the Sareer, breaks into the Citadel and steals two volumes of Leto's private journals. Leto's wolves hunt the raiders down in the forest and kill everyone except Siona, who gets away with the books. Leto knows exactly who took them. He lets her keep going. (God Emperor of Dune)

Moneo begs his master to spare his daughter. Leto refuses to punish her, and the reason slowly comes out. Siona is the product of the Atreides breeding programme Leto has run for over three millennia, and he wants to see what she is. Moneo once rebelled too, in his youth, before Leto took him into the desert and showed him something that turned him into the God Emperor's most loyal servant. (God Emperor of Dune)

Meanwhile the newest Duncan arrives from Tleilax. He wakes with his memories of the old Atreides days and finds a world he hates. Women carry the weapons, the Fremen are play-actors, and the boy Leto he once knew is now a huge grey worm body with a human face. Leto takes him out on the Royal Road and talks to him for hours. Duncan listens and stays loyal for now, but he keeps asking how many Duncans came before him and how they died. (God Emperor of Dune)

Hwi Noree and the Festival#

The Ixians, who build Leto's machines and test the edges of his rules, send a new ambassador to replace her uncle Malky. Hwi Noree is gentle, honest and completely unafraid of Leto. She was raised in a no-chamber, hidden from Leto's prescience, and bred with Tleilaxu help to be everything he could want. Leto knows it is a trap. He falls in love with her anyway, and tells her what he has never told anyone, that he can still feel human. (God Emperor of Dune)

The Royal Festival comes round, held every ten years in the festival city of Onn. Delegations from every power come for an audience. The Bene Gesserit send Tertius Eileen Anteac and the Truthsayer Marcus Claire Luyseyal, who arrive with spice they hope will tempt him and a warning they know will come too late. Tleilaxu Face Dancers have replaced almost everyone in the Ixian embassy, apart from Hwi herself, and they try to kill Leto. Duncan and the Fish Speakers cut them down. Leto then sets Anteac to sniff out the rest of the Face Dancers and sends her with a Fish Speaker force to raid Ix and learn how Hwi was made. Anteac captures Malky and dies on the mission. (God Emperor of Dune)

Leto announces he will marry Hwi. Moneo is horrified. The Fish Speakers, who see Leto as a god and themselves as his brides, are shaken. Leto doesn't care. (God Emperor of Dune)

Siona in the desert#

Siona is finally brought to the Citadel. Leto takes her out into the Sareer alone. When her water runs out, he carries her and shelters her, and at the end he gives her spice essence from his own body. In the trance she sees what Leto has seen for thousands of years: futures where humanity, without the Golden Path, is hunted down and wiped out to the last person. She comes back shaken and admits he is right about the danger. She still swears to destroy him. (God Emperor of Dune)

This is what Leto was waiting for. Siona doesn't appear in his visions at all. She is the first of a new line hidden from prescience, and her children will carry the trait. No future oracle, and no future tyrant like him, will be able to track or trap humanity through them. (God Emperor of Dune)

Leto then sends Siona and Duncan to the Museum Fremen village of Tuono, hosted by the Naib Garun, with Siona's Fish Speaker friend Nayla. He hopes the two will breed. Duncan and Siona find they have more in common with each other than with Leto. Siona has Nayla, who worships Leto but has been ordered to obey Siona, and Duncan has the Royal Road route. They plan an ambush for the wedding procession. (God Emperor of Dune)

The bridge over the Idaho River#

The procession sets out for Tuono, where the wedding is to be held. The Royal Road crosses a high bridge over the Idaho River. As Leto's cart, with Hwi and Moneo riding with him, reaches the middle, Nayla cuts the bridge with a lasgun on Siona's order. The bridge collapses. Hwi says to Leto, "I'll go on ahead, Love," and falls to her death. Moneo goes down too. Leto plunges into the river. Duncan, furious at Hwi's death, kills Nayla. (God Emperor of Dune)

Water is poison to sandtrout. The living skin that has wrapped Leto for thirty-five centuries tears itself loose and swims away, thousands of sandtrout scattering downstream. What is left of him drags itself onto the bank, burning and broken. Duncan and Siona find him there. (God Emperor of Dune)

The ending explained#

Leto doesn't die angry. He tells them he planned it. He tells them where his journals are hidden, at Dar-es-Balat, and where he has stored his great hoard of spice, which will be fought over for centuries. He tells Siona she is his success, the reason he lived so long. Then he dies. (God Emperor of Dune)

The ending turns on what the Golden Path actually was. Leto saw that humanity, kept in one empire and readable by prescience, would one day be found and destroyed, by a single enemy or by its own stagnation. So he made himself the worst tyrant in history. He kept every world starved, still and bored for 3,500 years, so that when he died people would explode outward and never again gather under one ruler. He calls this his lesson, and his death sets it off. (God Emperor of Dune)

Three things carry it forward. First, Siona's genes. Her line can't be seen by any oracle, so humanity can no longer be found and killed by one. Second, the sandtrout. They will remake Arrakis back into a desert and bring the worms back, and each new worm carries a pearl of Leto's awareness in an endless dream. Third, the hunger. With Leto gone and the Fish Speakers leaderless, the Famine Times begin, and people pour out into unmapped space in the Scattering. (God Emperor of Dune; Heretics of Dune)

Some things stay open. Herbert never shows Siona and Duncan's future, though later books reveal their descendants. Nor does the book say whether Leto was a saviour, a monster or both. He insists he was both, and leaves Siona and Duncan to decide what to do with that. For the dates around all this, the Dune timeline puts Leto's death at around 13728 AG. (God Emperor of Dune)

What it sets up#

Heretics of Dune picks up about 1,500 years later. Arrakis is a desert again, called Rakis, and the worms are back. The Scattering has bred new powers out in unknown space, and the first of them, the Honored Matres, are coming home. A girl named Sheeana Brugh, descended from Siona and Duncan, can command the worms. If you're reading in order, Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune come first, and the story closes with Chapterhouse: Dune. (Heretics of Dune)

Frequently asked questions

What happens at the end of God Emperor of Dune?
Siona's rebels cut the bridge over the Idaho River during Leto II's wedding procession. Leto falls into the water, his sandtrout skin breaks away, and he dies on the riverbank after telling Duncan Idaho and Siona where his journals and his spice hoard are hidden.
Did Leto II want to die?
Yes. He planned his own death for centuries. It was the last step of the Golden Path, and he chose Siona and the final Duncan Idaho to carry it out.
Why can't Leto see Siona in his visions?
Leto bred the Atreides line for 3,500 years to produce people hidden from prescience. Siona is the first success, so no oracle, Leto included, can track her or her descendants.
What happens to Hwi Noree?
Hwi falls from the bridge with Leto and dies. Her last words to him are "I'll go on ahead, Love."
How long after Children of Dune is God Emperor of Dune set?
About 3,500 years. The book takes place in the 3,508th year of Leto II's reign, around 13728 AG.
