Hwi Noree

the last Ixian Ambassador

Hwi Noree was the final Ixian Ambassador to Arrakis and the fiancee of the God Emperor Leto Atreides II. Genetically engineered by the Ixians to appeal to the remnants of Leto's humanity, she came to love him in truth, and her death on the way to their wedding hastened the end of his reign.

By Joe Garratt

Hwi Noree was the fiancee of God Emperor Leto Atreides II and the last Ixian Ambassador to Arrakis before his death. Engineered by the Ixians to disrupt Leto's Golden Path, she instead came to represent the temptation of his lost humanity, and her brief tenure as ambassador ended at her wedding with her death and his.

Origins and conditioning#

Mystery surrounded Hwi's early life. She was heavily genetically modified, or sequenced, by the Ixians using technology they had acquired from the Bene Tleilax. She was bred specifically to impact the God Emperor's emotions and disrupt the Golden Path that had, for three and a half thousand years, weighed heavily on many rival groups and cultures across the Empire.

Her life before Arrakis was spent in a no-chamber, where she was educated and conditioned by Ixian experts. There her empathic and morally driven personality was developed, making her a stark contrast to her ambassadorial predecessor and uncle, Malky.

Relationship with Leto II#

Shortly after her arrival on Arrakis, Hwi met with the God Emperor, and as the Ixians had planned he was immediately attracted to her, finding both her beauty and her charm almost intoxicating. She had been bred to appeal to the remnants of Leto's humanity, and by tempting him in this way the Ixians and their allies hoped he might be drawn off the Golden Path or at least made to second-guess it. In this they were correct.

Leto suspected Hwi had been planted, but he knew she consciously meant him no harm and found her irresistible, a combination that prevented him from dismissing or killing her. He proposed to her, assuring her that he was incapable of physical intimacy and promising tacit approval of a lover should they marry. After considering his offer, Hwi accepted.

Death at the Idaho River#

After months in which espionage and rebellion against the God Emperor increased, Leto hurried his marriage plans. As the pair passed over a bridge far above the raging Idaho River on their way to the ceremony, Duncan Idaho, Siona, the unsuspecting Nayla, and other rebels orchestrated an attack that collapsed the bridge. Realizing her fate, Hwi Noree told Leto, "I'll go on ahead, Love" before falling to her death. Leto followed quickly after, dissolving into thousands of sandtrout upon striking the water.

Hwi's attraction to both Leto and the last Duncan Idaho ghola created a rivalry that widened the wedge between the two and spurred Duncan toward his assassination attempt. Whether she ultimately served Leto's opponents or Leto himself remained unclear: her arrival hastened the God Emperor's death, the Ixians' chief aim, yet her effect on him highlighted his humanity and emboldened him to take the final step that secured the Golden Path and allowed humanity to move forward without his direction.
