House Vernius: the Ruling House of Ix in Dune
House Vernius ruled the machine world of Ix until an Emperor's grudge and a Tleilaxu takeover drove it into exile. It comes from the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson prequels, not Frank Herbert's novels, and its story runs through Earl Dominic, Lady Shando and their children Rhombur and Kailea.
House Vernius was the Great House that ruled Ix, the underground machine world of the Imperium, in the prequel novels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Its head held the title of Earl. Under Earl Dominic Vernius the House grew rich on Ixian invention, then lost everything when Emperor Elrood Corrino IX helped the Bene Tleilax take the planet. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)
Is House Vernius in Frank Herbert's Dune?#
Frank Herbert's Ix is a planet and a people, not a House. The glossary printed with Dune ranks Ix with Richese as supreme in machine culture. In God Emperor of Dune the Ixians send Hwi Noree to Leto II as their ambassador, and by Heretics of Dune Ix is a power in its own right, building machines the old Imperium would have burned. At no point does Frank Herbert say who ruled Ix in Paul's time. (Dune (appendix); God Emperor of Dune; Heretics of Dune)
Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson filled that gap in Dune: House Atreides (1999). Everything below about the Vernius family comes from their books. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)
Dominic and Shando Vernius#
Dominic Vernius started out as one of Elrood IX's favourites. As a young man he led Ixian troops to help the Emperor crush the Ecazi Revolt, fighting beside Duke Paulus Atreides, and the two became friends. That friendship is why the Atreides and Vernius families stayed so close for the next generation. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)
Dominic then made the Emperor an enemy. He fell in love with Shando Balut, one of Elrood's concubines, and when Elrood released her from his service, Dominic married her at once. Shando had already borne Elrood a secret son, Tyros Reffa, who was raised far from court. With Dominic she had two children, Rhombur and Kailea. Elrood never forgave the match. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides; Dune: House Corrino)
The fall of Ix#
The breaking point was business. Ixian engineers designed a new, larger heighliner for the Spacing Guild. Because Imperial taxes were charged per flight rather than per tonne, bigger ships meant fewer flights and less money for House Corrino. Elrood answered by secretly backing a rising of the suboids, the underclass who worked Ix's factories, and letting the Tleilaxu walk in behind them with Sardaukar support. Ix fell, the Tleilaxu claimed the Ixians had been building thinking machines, and House Vernius was declared renegade. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)
The young Leto Atreides was on Ix when it happened, sent there by Paulus to learn from the Ixians. He got out with Rhombur and Kailea, and the three reached Caladan as refugees. Dominic and Shando fled separately and went into hiding. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)
Neither of them survived exile. Shando was hunted down and killed by Sardaukar on Bela Tegeuse. Dominic built hidden bases, one of them on Arrakis, and died fighting the Sardaukar there rather than be taken. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides; Dune: House Harkonnen)
Rhombur, Kailea and the Atreides#
On Caladan the Vernius children became part of the Atreides household. Kailea became Leto's concubine and gave him his first son, Victor, but she never stopped resenting that she wasn't his wife. With a Harkonnen agent working on her, she plotted against Leto. The attack killed Victor and left Rhombur maimed and close to death, and Kailea took her own life. (Expanded books: Dune: House Harkonnen)
Rhombur survived because Wellington Yueh rebuilt much of his body with cybernetics. The near death changed him. Pushed by his Bene Gesserit concubine Tessia, he stopped waiting for the Landsraad to help and planned the attack that took Ix back from the Tleilaxu, working with Leto, Duncan Idaho and the Ixian resistance under C'tair Pilru. House Vernius was restored to its world. (Expanded books: Dune: House Corrino)
House Vernius after the restoration#
Earl Rhombur stayed Leto's closest ally. He was a guest at Leto's wedding to Ilesa Ecaz on Caladan, where Moritani assassins struck, and he later arrived from Ix with reinforcements for the siege of Ritka that ended House Moritani in the War of Assassins of 10187 AG. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)
He died on Balut in 10188 AG. Bronso and Paul had run away together, and when the searchers caught up with them on Balut, Rhombur pushed the planet's governor out of the way of an assassin's sonic blast and took it himself. His son Bronso was left as heir to a House that had been restored for only a few years. (Expanded books: The Winds of Dune)

House Vernius in the games#
House Vernius of Ix was the first downloadable faction for Dune: Spice Wars, released in March 2024 as the game's seventh playable side. It is led by the cyborg Earl Rhombur, and it plays as a research faction that controls drones and limits the technology of its rivals. (Dune: Spice Wars)
Dune: Awakening (2025) puts House Vernius among the 25 Houses of its Landsraad, the council players can work for to earn rewards. Awakening is set in an alternate history, so its Vernius family doesn't follow the prequels exactly. (Dune: Awakening)
