Paulus Atreides (10089 A.G. to 10154 A.G.), called the Old Duke, was the twenty-fifth Duke of House Atreides, father of Duke Leto Atreides I and grandfather of Paul Atreides, who was named in his honor. A leader beloved by the people of Caladan and respected throughout the Landsraad, he met his death in his own bullring, gored by a bull that had been secretly drugged.

The Old Duke of Caladan#

Paulus Atreides was the son of Kean Atreides, grandson of Miklos Atreides, and the twenty-fifth Duke of House Atreides. Around the age of fifteen he survived for months on a battlefield with only the few possessions in the pack on his back. He married Helena Richese, and through the match her House regained some of its lost prestige. He fathered a single son, Leto. Though he admitted at first to loving Helena, that affection later cooled, and he kept other mistresses. During the Ecazi Revolt, Paulus fought on Elrood IX's side against the rebels alongside Dominic Vernius.

The Old Duke was an honorable man, well respected by the Landsraad and beloved by his people. Not a formal man, he formed strong bonds with the common folk of Caladan, unlike his wife, who maintained her contacts among the powerful Houses. He raised Leto with methods Helena disapproved of, setting the boy to work among the villagers, including a month in the pundi rice fields, and having him mingle with citizens and commoners. He was known as a great leader and a showman, with a flair for diplomacy, daring, and the dramatic.

Death in the bullring#

In a display true to his character, the Old Duke announced a bullfighting spectacle in honor of his son's departure for Ix, declaring that he would fight in it himself. Preparing for the event, Thufir Hawat suggested that the stablemaster Yresk lightly tranquilize the bull, but the Duke refused, wanting a real challenge, and he guarded his side with only a half shield. Though he had not performed for a year, he fought for an hour and killed the bull to the admiration of the crowd. He was afterward killed by a Salusan bull in the bullring of the Plaza de Toros.

Leto later discovered that his mother had been involved in drugging the animal, and he exiled her to the Eastern Continent of Caladan, to live in solitude in the Abbey of the Sisters in Isolation.

Legacy#

The bull that killed the Old Duke was destroyed, and its head was mounted on the wall of the Dining Hall of Castle Caladan, and later carried to the Keep at Arrakeen, still bearing the Old Duke's bloodstains. Though Paul Atreides was thought, and thought himself, much like his father Leto, it was said that Paul in truth more resembled the Old Duke in his bearing. Duncan Idaho, Thufir Hawat, and Duke Leto alike observed how Paul's manner of leadership, certain of his movements, and phrases he uttered recalled the grandfather he was named for.

Thufir Hawat, the Mentat Master of Assassins, was first brought into Atreides service by the Old Duke, and remained loyal through three successive generations of the House, a mark of the Old Duke's gift for inspiring loyalty. The Old Duke also took the young Duncan Idaho into his home, a kindness Idaho never forgot; after becoming a Sword Master of the Ginaz, Idaho proudly wielded the Old Duke's sword.
