Helena Atreides

the lady who arranged a duke's death

Lady Helena Atreides, born Helena Richese, was the wife of Duke Paulus Atreides and the mother of Leto Atreides I. Estranged from her husband and loyal to House Richese, she secretly arranged the assassination of Paulus and was exiled to a religious order on Caladan, where she died decades later.

Lady Helena Atreides (10095 AG to 10187 AG), born Helena Richese, was the wife of Duke Paulus Atreides and the mother of Duke Leto Atreides I. The daughter of a Richese count, she entered a loveless political marriage, kept her allegiance to her birth House, and ultimately arranged her husband's assassination. Exiled to a religious order on Caladan, she lived in isolation for decades and met her grandson Paul Atreides only once before her death.

A political marriage#

Helena was the daughter of Count Ilban Richese and his wife Edwina Corrino. Her marriage to Paulus was political in nature, and the couple shared little in common and limited affection. Partly for this reason and partly because of her continued allegiance to House Richese, the two gradually drifted apart until they were on acrimonious terms. She nevertheless maintained a perfect front during important meetings and public events and was attentive to her own appearance. In her spare time she preferred to study the Orange Catholic Bible and other religious texts.

Helena disapproved of how Paulus educated their son, sending Leto to work alongside villagers in the pundi rice fields and to socialize with common citizens. She was not warm toward Leto and bore him only out of duty to House Atreides rather than maternal instinct, a coldness rooted in her own childhood trauma. When Leto was to leave for Ix, she pressed Paulus to send him elsewhere.

Opposing the Vernius exiles#

The relationship between Helena and Paulus reached a new low while Leto was living on Ix. When Leto returned to Caladan bringing the exiled children of House Vernius, Rhombur and Kailea, Helena strongly opposed sheltering them at Castle Caladan. She held that House Vernius had been driven from Ix for an affront to God, believing they were being punished for coming close to building thinking machines.

The assassination of Paulus#

After a year, Helena began to plot secretly against her husband, convinced that he was doing irreparable harm to his ducal position. She arranged for the Salusan bull that Paulus was to fight to be drugged, and the animal killed the Duke in the ring. Leto later discovered his mother's role in the drugging and exiled her to Caladan's Eastern Continent, to live in solitude at the Abbey of the Sisters in Isolation.

Years in isolation and death#

Years later, when Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV attacked Korona, an artificial moon of Richese, during the Great Spice War, the damage to the planet below was catastrophic. Out of concern for her maiden people, Helena trekked across Caladan to ask Leto to aid her former homeworld, and out of compassion for his mother's House he agreed to send relief.

More than ten years after that, during the War of Assassins of 10187 AG, Duncan Idaho fled with the young Paul Atreides to the sparsely populated Eastern Continent to escape assassins. Taking refuge with the Sisters at their abbey, Paul met his grandmother, who had risen to Abbess, for the first time, though she was not especially warm to him. Helena rebuked Idaho for bringing the boy and disturbing the order's peace. When Grumman mercenaries finally located the pair and attacked the abbey, Helena chose neither to flee nor resist. She continued her meditative weaving as the building collapsed around her and was killed by the falling rubble.
