Caladan
ancestral home of House Atreides
Caladan was a lush oceanic world orbiting Delta Pavonis, the ancestral seat of House Atreides for more than ten thousand years. Birthplace of Duke Leto I and Paul Atreides, it was a planet of rain, orchards, and fisheries before the family was ordered to Arrakis.
Caladan, later renamed Dan, was the third planet orbiting the star Delta Pavonis, a lush oceanic world and the ancestral home of House Atreides. It was the birthplace of Duke Leto Atreides I, of his son Paul Atreides, and of most of the Atreides ancestors who had ruled the planet, whose traditional seat was Castle Caladan. The contrast between its rainfall and oceans and the dry sands of Arrakis defined the great upheaval of the family's history when they were ordered to exchange one fief for the other.
A world of water#
Caladan's environment centered on rain, a common feature of its meteorology, and both Paul and his mother Jessica later told the Fremen stories of water falling freely from the skies. The landscape was scattered with rivers and mountains and supported a diverse and complex underwater ecosystem, with the planet's surface largely covered by ocean. The contrast with Arrakis could hardly have been greater, and the Fremen, for whom open water and rainfall had been a myth for generations, were intrigued by tales of the Atreides home.
Economy and culture#
The planet maintained a large agricultural industry, and under the Atreides its economy flourished through orchards, some of them part of the family's own holdings, alongside exports of pundi rice and fine wines. Because so much of Caladan was ocean, a great deal of its trade rested on fishing, an industry so large that it became woven into the culture of the people. Any view of the sea from the coast would commonly be dotted with fishing trawlers.
House Atreides ruled every aspect of Caladan, holding it as a duchy and siridar fief under the Imperium. The family governed through dominance of both sea and air and maintained a regular standing army that was fiercely loyal. Shortly before leaving for Arrakis, the Atreides had also managed to train a small elite force comparable in ability to the Emperor's Sardaukar.
From Caladan to Arrakis and back#
In 10,191 AG, House Atreides was ordered to relinquish the fief of Caladan, the family's home for more than ten thousand years, and to take control of Arrakis, which had been managed by the ancient enemy House Harkonnen. Count Hasimir Fenring was named siridar-absentia of Caladan, though he seldom ruled from the planet itself. The crossing was difficult: early in his rule of Arrakis, Duke Leto suffered severe homesickness for Caladan and doubted he would ever call the desert world home, and he brought many artifacts and foodstuffs from his homeworld to ease the migration for himself, his family, and his men.
After the Desert War ended in 10,193 AG, with House Atreides ascended to the Golden Lion Throne, Caladan came once more under direct Atreides rule. This time the fief was given to Gurney Halleck, whom Paul trusted to rule in his absence, and Jessica later returned to the planet with her son to consecrate his leadership among the Imperium. In the roughly five thousand years between the revolt and the return of the Lost Ones from the Scattering, the planet's name was shortened to Dan, and all things pertaining to it became known as Danian.
