Battle of Caladan
the bloodless defence of the Atreides homeworld
The Battle of Caladan was an attempted Harkonnen and Moritani assault on the Atreides homeworld in 10175 AG. Mentat Thufir Hawat repelled it without a shot, using projectors to fake an overwhelming defensive fleet.
The Battle of Caladan was an attempted assault on Caladan, the homeworld of House Atreides, in 10175 AG. It was planned by the Harkonnen heir Glossu Rabban and Viscount Hundro Moritani of Grumman, but was turned back without a single shot by the Atreides Mentat Thufir Hawat, and ended in an Atreides victory.
Background#
Glossu Rabban, called the Beast, commanded the Harkonnen Keep on Giedi Prime, where for a time he operated free of the close oversight of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his Mentat Piter De Vries. Anxious about being supplanted as heir by his brother Feyd-Rautha, Rabban sought a way to prove his value to the Baron. To that end he allied with Viscount Hundro Moritani of Grumman to mount a strike against Caladan, the seat of Duke Leto Atreides.
The plan#
Moritani urged an aggressive plan built on secrecy and speed. The attack was timed for a moment when the Atreides military was committed off-world, and was meant to fall on Duke Leto as he returned from Kaitain. Unmarked ships would be used to hide Harkonnen and Moritani involvement, and all transport to and from any arriving Heighliner would be restricted so that Caladan could not summon aid from the Landsraad.
The deception#
The plan was undone by timing and cunning. Thufir Hawat, Mentat of House Atreides, returned to Caladan before the unmarked fleet arrived. Anticipating the assault, Hawat mounted holoprojectors on fishing boats to conjure the illusion of a far larger defensive fleet than the Atreides actually possessed. The ruse convinced the attackers that Caladan's defences were insurmountable, and the unmarked ships withdrew without firing a shot.
Aftermath#
The Atreides marked the bloodless victory with a week-long festival, celebrated in the courtyard of Castle Caladan and the streets of the old town with seafood, spice beer, and bonfires on the beaches. Hawat's deception was particularly praised, and Gurney Halleck sang of the triumph by the fires. For all the celebration, the attempt had shown how far House Harkonnen and its allies would go for dominance, and it hardened the long enmity between the two Houses while leaving the Atreides standing in the Landsraad untouched.
