Giedi Prime
homeworld of House Harkonnen
Giedi Prime, later renamed Gammu, was the industrial homeworld of House Harkonnen, orbiting the star Ophiuchi B. A planet of factories, arenas, and an oppressed populace, it later passed to Atreides administration and eventually became a Bene Gesserit base.
Giedi Prime, later renamed Gammu, was a planet orbiting the star Ophiuchi B and the historical homeworld of House Harkonnen. Heavily industrialized under Harkonnen rule, it was a world of factories, arenas, and an oppressed working populace, the seat from which the Baron and his heirs drew their soldiers and their wealth. After the fall of the Harkonnens it passed to Atreides administration, was slowly stripped of its industry and replanted, and in the distant ages of the Scattering became a base of the Bene Gesserit.
Characteristics#
Giedi Prime had a day length of roughly 31.27 standard hours and a local year lasting about 2.6 standard years. Its temperatures were average and its level of photosynthesis low, the latter a consequence of the heavy industrialization imposed by the Harkonnens. The house nonetheless preserved some of the planet's original forests, chiefly stands of pilingitam trees grown for logging and export. The atmosphere was rich in ozone, which gave the air an invigorating quality, though the dominant landscape was a harsh industrial and volcanic wasteland.
During the era of the Padishah empire the planet was covered with factories, arenas, and many cities. The arenas hosted spectacles for the populace, including gladiatorial events, and under the rule of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen his nephew Feyd-Rautha often performed in them as a way of building popularity among the common people and the Houses Minor.
Population#
The Harkonnen military was conscripted from the general populace of Giedi Prime, and these forces proved effective in part because many of the conscripts had channeled an oppressed upbringing into military discipline. Much of the population lived a meager and oppressed existence under the harsh rule of the house, and many natives were used as slave labor to work the machines of heavy industry that dominated the surface. Gammu natives were often small, with squarish heads and beady eyes, and Giedi Prime natives carried a distinct speech pattern recognizable to an expert, along with the common mannerism of clapping the hands together for emphasis.
History after the Harkonnens#
The planet served as the homeworld of House Harkonnen for many generations after the house returned from exile. With the fall of the Harkonnens and the rise of House Atreides, administration passed to the people of Caladan, and the planet was renamed Gammu by the Atreides Warmaster Gurney Halleck, though the name did not hold for long before the world was again called Giedi Prime. It was a historical irony that Halleck should come to hold total power over the planet, for years earlier he and his family had been slaves to the Harkonnens who ruled there.
Under Caladanian, later Danian, administration most of the machines of industry were dismantled and the natural ecosystem was regenerated through large-scale replanting that lasted thousands of years, though even five thousand years after Harkonnen rule had ended an oily residue could still be found in the soil. At some point after the rule of the God Emperor Leto II the planet was once more called Gammu. Much of it eventually came under the control of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, who made it the base from which they grew gholas of Duncan Idaho for their breeding programs, while parts of its cities were held by Houses Minor and by wealthy organizations returning from the Scattering, who brought with them many new and strange customs.
