Corrinth City: the capital of Kaitain and the seat of the Corrino Empire

Corrinth City was the chief city of Kaitain and the administrative centre of the Imperium through ten thousand years of Corrino rule. Hassik Corrino III taxed his subjects almost to bankruptcy to build it, and Jihadi troops badly damaged it during the ascension of House Atreides.

Corrinth City, often just Corrinth, was the capital of Kaitain and the administrative centre of the whole Imperium for the ten millennia that House Corrino held the throne. It took its name from the house that built it, and it was the most lavish and glamorous city on the planet.

TL;DR

Kaitain was the homeworld of the Padishah Emperors, and Corrinth City was its chief city and the seat from which the Imperium was run. The fifth Padishah Emperor, Hassik Corrino III, taxed his subjects nearly into bankruptcy to rebuild the governmental infrastructure there. The Landsraad houses, unwilling to be outdone by the imperial house, then raised monuments of their own alongside his, and within a single generation an unremarkable planet had become a display of imperial architecture, museums and bureaucratic self-indulgence. Abulurd Rabban, arriving from Giedi Prime and Lankiveil, read the whole effect as form without substance: soaring government buildings, jewelled inlays, polished slabs of precious stone, chime kites tethered to the towers and shedding rainbows on the flagstones below. The city held the Great Hall, the Imperial Opal Palace, the Imperial Prison, the Imperial University and the Landsraad Hall of Oratory among others. Jihadi troops attacked and severely damaged Kaitain and Corrinth during the ascension of House Atreides.

What was Corrinth City?#

Corrinth City was the chief city and capital of Kaitain, homeworld of the Padishah Emperors, and the place from which the administration of the Imperium was actually conducted.

Everything imperial ran through it. The Emperor lived there, the Landsraad argued there, the university taught there and the prison held whoever the throne wanted held. Above the entrance to the Great Hall in the Imperial Opal Palace ran the line "Law is the Ultimate Science," which is either a statement of principle or a warning, depending on who was standing under it.

How the city was built#

Kaitain had been unremarkable. Hassik Corrino III changed that by taxing his subjects nearly into bankruptcy in order to rebuild a governmental infrastructure worth the name.

The Landsraad supplied the rest without being asked. Its member houses would not be outdone by the imperial house, so they put up monuments of their own, and the competition finished the job inside a generation. What came out of it was a spectacle: imperial architecture, museums and a scale of bureaucratic self-indulgence that had no obvious ceiling.

Abulurd Rabban, who had grown up between Giedi Prime and Lankiveil, walked through it and was not persuaded. He saw towering government buildings like something out of a drug-induced fantasy, soaring edifices with jewelled inlays and polished slabs of precious stone, colourful chime kites tethered to the towers and writhing on the breeze under a permanently blue sky, prismatic ribbons drifting overhead and throwing rainbows down onto the flagstones. His conclusion was that Kaitain cared about form and not about substance.

What happened to Corrinth City?#

Jihadi troops attacked Kaitain and Corrinth during the ascension of House Atreides under Muad'Dib, and the city was severely damaged.

Ten thousand years of accumulated imperial display made a poor defensive position. The buildings that had been raised to show the Landsraad who ruled the Imperium were still standing when the answer to that question changed.
