Glossu "Beast" Rabban was the brutish eldest nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, serving as Count of Lankiveil and Governor of Arrakis during the Desert War. His tyranny over the planet's population earned him the Fremen name Mudir Nahya, the Demon Ruler, and helped provoke the rebellion that destroyed House Harkonnen.
Origins#
Glossu Rabban was the eldest son of Abulurd Rabban, Count of Lankiveil and Vladimir Harkonnen's youngest demibrother. Abulurd had renounced the Harkonnen name and adopted the surname Rabban when given the sub-district governorship of Rabban-Lankiveil and through his marriage into the Minor House Rabban. From a young age Rabban was mentored by his uncle Vladimir. He inherited the Harkonnen penchant for sadism and cruelty, but little else.
After coming of age, Rabban became involved in managing the Harkonnen slave pits on Giedi Prime, where he tortured and killed many slaves, including the sister of Gurney Halleck, and gave Halleck an inkvine scar across his cheek. His brutality earned him the name Beast. While his youngest brother Feyd-Rautha was taken in by their uncle to be groomed as heir, Rabban succeeded his father as Count of Lankiveil and was later granted the governorship of Arrakis.
Governor of Arrakis#
In 10191 AG, control of spice production was temporarily taken from the Harkonnens and handed to their rivals, House Atreides, though this was part of a plot orchestrated by the Baron and the Emperor to destroy that House. After the Atreides were broken, control of Arrakis returned to House Harkonnen, and the Baron reinstated Rabban as planetary governor following the death of Piter de Vries.
The Baron intended Rabban to rule the desert planet through terror and submission for a time, so that when his favored younger brother Feyd took over, Feyd would be welcomed as a hero and restore them to the Emperor's favor. Rabban's reign was tyrannical, and the Fremen came to know him as Mudir Nahya.
The Desert War and death#
Rabban's merciless oppression provoked a lengthy rebellion that severely hindered spice production, fought by guerrilla fighters united under the Fremen prophet Muad'Dib. The Baron secretly escalated the crisis by cutting off all support lines from Arrakis, prompting Rabban to attempt a peace treaty with the Fremen that never came through. Throughout, Rabban repeatedly warned his uncle and subordinates not to underestimate the Fremen or their numbers.
When the rebellion grew too great, the Emperor, accompanied by the Imperial court and his Sardaukar army, came to Arrakis to end the war. Just before the Battle of Arrakeen, Rabban and Feyd were sent by their uncle to scout the desert for Fremen. Rabban lost his life in the battle, slain by the populace he had brutalized for years, his body later found among the many Harkonnen casualties.
