Piter de Vries was a Twisted Mentat developed by the Bene Tleilax. Serving House Harkonnen under Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Piter was an ambitious and impatient sadist whose bloodlust disturbed even his master. He was the strategist behind the conspiracy that brought down House Atreides.
Breaking House Atreides#
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the former steward of Arrakis before being displaced by his ancestral enemy House Atreides, was determined to retake the spice planet and destroy his rival at any cost. Central to his effort was his brilliant strategist, assassin, and torturer, Piter de Vries. Indifferent to the Baron's ego and ideals of Harkonnen supremacy, Piter's sole motivation was to acquire Lady Jessica as a personal plaything.
To weaken House Atreides from within, Piter first sowed discord and distrust, arranging a half-genuine attempt on the young heir's life and falsely implicating his Bene Gesserit mother of treachery. He then secured the one traitor no one would suspect. Piter broke the Imperial Conditioning of a Suk doctor in Duke Leto Atreides' service, an act believed impossible without killing the victim. After abducting the doctor's Bene Gesserit wife, Wanna Marcus, Piter forced Wellington Yueh to witness her agonized groveling in his pain amplifiers until the doctor's grief and hatred grew intense enough to violate his conditioning. The Baron then promised Yueh his wife's freedom in exchange for delivering the Duke and his family.
Before their departure from Giedi Prime, the Baron claimed Piter had outgrown his usefulness, noting his Eyes of Ibad had gone fully blue with no whites left. Piter retorted that the Baron was jealous it had been the Mentat who devised the plot, and remained unconcerned by the Baron's threat, knowing he was still too useful to discard. He was then assigned to function as Mentat for Feyd-Rautha.
Victory and the fate of the captives#
After the Harkonnen invasion of Arrakis, the Baron brought Lady Jessica and Paul before Piter and offered him a choice between the siridar-governorship of Arrakis and the captive woman. Piter chose Jessica, but decided that she and her son would be better disposed of in the deep desert, where sandworms would consume their remains. Jessica reasoned that the choice had been offered to secure Piter's loyalty and to avoid answering to the Emperor's Truthsayer about why the Atreides were being held.
When the drugged and helpless Duke Leto was brought before the Baron, Piter summarily executed Yueh, telling him he would now be reunited with Wanna, to foreclose any chance of future retribution.
Death#
Knowing the Mentat was about to torture him for the whereabouts of Paul and Jessica, the bound Duke Leto was brought into the Arrakeen governor's palace dining hall before Piter and the Baron. The Baron discovered the Ducal signet ring was missing, an item he had long coveted as the symbol of his victory, and blamed Piter for having moved too precipitately. Leto then crushed the false tooth installed by Yueh, releasing an airborne toxin that filled the room. The Baron narrowly escaped, but everyone else was killed, including Piter de Vries. Though his primary target survived, Yueh had succeeded in slaying the man who had kidnapped, tortured, and murdered his wife.
Piter's death also disrupted the Baron's plan to install a cruel tyrant on Arrakis and then present Feyd-Rautha as a savior. Forced to improvise, Vladimir gave the assignment to Glossu Rabban. The invention of Residual Poison was attributed to Piter, and the Baron later used it to ensure that Piter's successor, the captive Atreides Mentat Thufir Hawat, would obey.
Appearance#
Piter de Vries was a slender man with effeminate features, inky blue-within-blue eyes, lips stained red from drinking sapho juice, and a tenor voice of sweet, musical quality.
