Czigo: Harkonnen soldier and assassin

Czigo was a soldier and assassin in the service of House Harkonnen during the seizure of Arrakis in 10191 AG. A minor figure in the vast machinery of the Harkonnen war effort, he was recorded among the House troops who fought in the Siege of Arrakeen, and he might have vanished into the anonymity of that campaign had the Mentat Piter de Vries not chosen him for a task of the highest secrecy: the disposal of Paul Atreides and the Lady Jessica in the deserts beyond the Shield Wall. The mission's failure cost Czigo his life and preserved the two survivors of House Atreides whose desert exile ended Harkonnen rule on the planet.

A soldier of House Harkonnen#

Czigo served House Harkonnen as a common soldier, one of the many armed retainers the House maintained alongside its family line and its named lieutenants. The rolls of known Harkonnen men placed him in the same company as figures such as the Mentat assassin Piter de Vries, the guard captain Umman Kudu, and the guardsman Iakin Nefud, though Czigo held no rank or title of record. His listed duty was that of litter bearer, and his recorded weapon was a knife, the modest equipment of a man expected to carry burdens and, when ordered, to kill quietly.

Little else survived of his origins or his years of service before the Harkonnen return to Arrakis. What preserved his name in the histories of the period was not his station but his final assignment, an errand meant to be performed without witnesses and remembered by no one.

The fall of Arrakeen#

In 10191 AG, Harkonnen forces, reinforced by Sardaukar concealed in Harkonnen livery, struck the city of Arrakeen and the ducal seat of House Atreides in the Siege of Arrakeen. The city and the Residency fell into Harkonnen hands, Duke Leto Atreides was taken through the treachery within his own household, and the apparatus of Atreides rule on Arrakis was destroyed in a single night. Czigo was counted among the Harkonnen soldiery of that campaign.

The victory left the conquerors with a delicate problem. The Duke's concubine, the Lady Jessica, and his heir, Paul, had been taken alive. Piter de Vries, the Twisted Mentat who had devised the conspiracy against House Atreides, judged that mother and son were better disposed of in the deep desert, where a sandworm would consume their remains and no evidence of the deed would survive to implicate the Baron before the Landsraad. The task of carrying the prisoners out and finishing them fell to two expendable men: Czigo and his comrade Kinet.

The mission beyond the Shield Wall#

The assignment given to Czigo and Kinet was to eliminate Paul Atreides and the Lady Jessica in the deserts outside the Shield Wall, the great rock barrier that sheltered Arrakeen from the open sands. The pair were soldiers and assassins both, and the mission was arranged with some care, for the Harkonnens knew what their prisoner was. The Lady Jessica was Bene Gesserit, trained in the Voice, the Sisterhood's art of commanding obedience through precisely pitched speech. Against that power the Baron took a precaution: Kinet, a scarfaced soldier whom Paul Atreides privately dubbed Scarface, was chosen specifically because he was deaf, and a man who could not hear could not be manipulated by Jessica's Voice.

The precaution was sound as far as it reached. Its flaw was that it reached only one of the two men. Kinet carried a lasgun and was proof against the Voice; Czigo carried a knife and was not. Two hearing ears in that party were enough to undo it.

Death in the desert#

Beyond the Shield Wall, with the prisoners in their power and no witnesses within reach, the assassins' advantage dissolved. The Lady Jessica used the Voice on Czigo, the vulnerable half of the pair, and through him the captives broke the trap that had been prepared for them. In the violence that followed, both Harkonnen soldiers were killed by Paul and the Lady Jessica, and the two Atreides escaped into the desert their executioners had chosen as an unmarked grave. Czigo died on Arrakis in 10191 AG, the same year and campaign in which he had shared in the triumph of his House.

What the failure cost the Harkonnens#

The deaths of Czigo and Kinet went unavenged and, for a long while, unexamined. The Harkonnen occupiers set about restoring spice production in the belief that House Atreides had been wiped out and that nothing in the desert posed a threat to them. In that belief they were twice wrong. Paul and Jessica survived the open sands with the aid of a fremkit, the desert survival pack of the Fremen, and endured until they encountered Stilgar and were taken into his sietch.

From that refuge grew the Fremen uprising of the Desert War, the conflict under whose records Czigo's own service was filed. The prisoners he had been ordered to erase returned at the head of the Fremen legions, destroyed Harkonnen power on Arrakis, and brought down the imperial order that had sanctioned the attack on House Atreides. Czigo remained a footnote in that history, but a consequential one: the man on whom the Voice fell when the Harkonnen scheme required both of its killers to be deaf, and only one of them was.
