Chiara: the Harkonnen spy in Castle Caladan

Chiara Rash-Olin was an elderly lady in waiting from the Imperial Court of Kaitain and a secret agent of House Harkonnen. Placed inside Castle Caladan as attendant to Kailea Vernius, the ducal concubine of Duke Leto Atreides I, she spent years reporting to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen while working to damage the Duke's standing from within his own household. Her patient manipulation of Kailea's grievances ripened into the skyclipper bombing that killed the Duke's six year old son, Victor Atreides, and maimed Prince Rhombur Vernius. When Kailea at last understood who had guided her hand, she drove a blade into the old woman's heart.

A matron from the Imperial Court#

Chiara Rash-Olin built her reputation at the heart of the Imperium, spending many years in the household of the Imperial Chamberlain Aken Hesban on Kaitain. That long service made her a matron of some renown, the kind of court attendant whose presence lent polish to any noble household, and it was precisely that standing which made her useful to the enemies of House Atreides.

She came to Caladan when House Atreides engaged her to serve Kailea Vernius, the exiled daughter of House Vernius who had become Duke Leto's concubine and the mother of his first son. The appointment itself raised eyebrows. Many within the Atreides household wondered why so celebrated a figure of the Imperial Court would abandon Kaitain for a water world on the edge of court society. Chief among the doubters was the Mentat Master of Assassins, Thufir Hawat, who tested the old woman for signs of hidden purpose. He found nothing. Chiara passed into the service of Castle Caladan with her secret intact.

That secret was simple and lethal. Chiara was a planted agent of House Harkonnen, and once installed within the castle she reported covertly to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen himself. Her assignment was not murder, at least not at first. Her goal was to damage the reputation of Duke Leto Atreides, to work quietly at the seams of his household until something tore.

The poisoning of Kailea Vernius#

Chiara's chosen instrument was her own mistress. She gained Lady Kailea's trust completely, presenting herself as a confidante who shared the concubine's ambitions for herself and her son. The material she had to work with was already combustible. House Vernius had been declared a renegade House of the Landsraad, leaving Kailea a dispossessed exile whose only claim to station ran through Leto. She wanted their son Victor named heir of House Atreides, and Leto refused her continually, unwilling to bind his House's future to a formal union he had never made.

Over a long span of years the old lady in waiting planted false information and gentle suggestion, so slightly and so patiently that Kailea never perceived the shape of what was being done to her. Each new wound to Kailea's pride became a tool. When the Bene Gesserit Jessica arrived on Caladan as a second concubine to the Duke, Chiara moved quickly, prodding Kailea with the warning that she and Victor might soon be displaced altogether. Kailea also knew that Archduke Armand Ecaz had extended an offer of marriage to Leto on behalf of his surviving daughter, Ilesa Ecaz. These facts weighed heavily on her mind, and Chiara made certain they kept weighing.

The whispering campaign arrived at its intended destination. Chiara guided Kailea into believing that the only path to her future happiness was the death of Duke Leto. With the Duke gone, young Victor could assume the ducal rights of House Atreides, and Kailea would rule as Regent. Together the two women orchestrated a plot to kill Leto in a staged crash of his skyclipper, the engine powered dirigible he used for planetary travel.

The skyclipper bomb#

The plot required explosives, and the explosives were locked in the Atreides armaments depot under the charge of Swain Goire, the trusted Captain of the Armory at Cala City. Kailea had begun an affair with Goire as her marriage soured, and unbeknownst to him she slipped the key of the depot from his belt clasp and passed it to Chiara. Goire assumed he had misplaced the key and said nothing for days, giving the conspirators all the time they needed.

Leto had planned for weeks to tour the villages of Caladan's Western Continent aboard the skyclipper, and all of Cala City was abuzz with the coming journey. On the night before his departure, Chiara let herself into the Armory, removed a large cache of explosives, rigged a time bomb, and placed it aboard the blimp like craft. Before the vessel departed skyward the next day, she notified Kailea that the bomb was in place.

Then the plan collapsed into catastrophe. Goire brought Kailea word that her brother Rhombur Vernius and her beloved six year old son Victor had boarded the skyclipper to accompany the Duke. The explosion and the crash that followed killed Victor, left Rhombur horribly maimed, and spared the one man the bomb had been built for. Duke Leto survived.

Death in Kailea's chamber#

The bombing destroyed its own authors. Deeply depressed, and knowing that judgment would soon come for her, Kailea summoned Chiara to her bedroom. In that confrontation the concubine finally saw through the years of gentle counsel. She realized that she had been manipulated by her own assistant, and that Chiara Rash-Olin had been a spy for House Harkonnen all along. Before the old woman could speak in her own defense, Kailea plunged a blade she had snatched from Goire only minutes earlier deep into Chiara's heart.

Kailea did not long outlive her. She committed suicide by leaping from a balcony of Castle Caladan, leaving Goire alone to face the Duke's judgment. Chiara's mission had failed in its particulars, for Leto lived and no Regency ever came, yet the Baron's patient agent had still cut a wound into House Atreides that never fully closed. The Duke's first son was dead, the heir of House Vernius was broken in body, and the House of the Red Hawk had learned that even a matron vetted by Thufir Hawat could carry Harkonnen poison through its gates.
