Kailea Vernius (10141 AG to 10174 AG) was a member of House Vernius, born on Ix as the daughter of Earl Dominic Vernius and Lady Shando Balut, and the younger sister of Rhombur Vernius. After the fall of her House she became the first concubine of Duke Leto Atreides I and the mother of his first child, Victor Atreides. Her ambition for her son, sharpened by a Harkonnen spy at her side, drew her into a plot to murder Leto that ended instead in the death of Victor and her own.

Daughter of Ix#

As a member of the Great House Vernius, Kailea lived with her family in the underground cities of the machine world of Ix. In time the family welcomed the young Duke Leto Atreides, firstborn son of Duke Paulus Atreides, who had come to study politics alongside their son Rhombur, and they hoped for a match between Leto and Kailea. Soon afterward the planet was overthrown by the Imperial Sardaukar and the Bene Tleilax. Kailea narrowly escaped with her brother Rhombur and Leto to Caladan, where the three lived as refugees.

Concubine and mother#

Over time Kailea and Leto fell in love and had their son, Victor, in a period when both were happy. Some time after, an old woman named Chiara joined House Atreides to serve the ducal concubine as a lady-in-waiting. Kailea grew less content with her position. With House Vernius declared a renegade House of the Landsraad, she wished her son Victor to be named heir to House Atreides, but Leto refused to do so.

When the Bene Gesserit Jessica joined House Atreides as a second concubine, Chiara quickly worked on Kailea, warning that she and her son might be displaced. Kailea also knew of a marriage offer made to Leto by Archduke Armand Ecaz on behalf of his surviving daughter, Ilesa. These pressures weighed heavily on her, and Chiara guided her toward the belief that her only path to happiness lay in the death of Duke Leto. Together they devised a plot to kill him in a staged ship crash, with Chiara placing a bomb aboard Leto's skyclipper.

The plot and its ruin#

Kailea began an affair with Swain Goire, the armaments keeper of House Atreides, and without his knowledge took his key to the armory and gave it to Chiara. Chiara drew explosives from the armory, rigged a timed device, and placed it aboard the skyclipper that Leto had planned for weeks to take across Caladan's Western Continent. Chiara confirmed to Kailea that the bomb was in place before the craft departed.

Only afterward did Goire tell Kailea that her brother Rhombur and her son Victor had joined Leto aboard the vessel. The explosion and crash maimed Rhombur and killed her six-year-old son, while Leto survived. Knowing judgment awaited her, a despairing Kailea summoned Chiara and realized she had been manipulated by a spy for House Harkonnen. She drew the blade she had taken from Goire and stabbed Chiara through the heart. When Thufir Hawat and other Atreides officials came to arrest her, Kailea took her own life by leaping from a balcony of Castle Caladan.
