Cammar Pilru: Ix's ambassador in exile

Cammar Pilru was the Ixian ambassador to the Imperial Court on Kaitain during the reign of Elrood Corrino IX, and the senior diplomat of Ix when the Bene Tleilax seized his homeworld. Husband of the Guild worker S'tina Pilru and father of the twins C'tair and D'murr Pilru, he pleaded Ix's case before an Emperor who had already sold the planet to its invaders. When House Vernius went renegade and Ix was renamed Xuttah, Pilru refused to surrender his office. For more than twenty years he maintained an Ixian embassy in exile, worked the Landsraad for support that never came, and in the end delivered the two things that mattered most to the restored House Vernius: the evidence that forced Shaddam Corrino IV to pay restitution to Ix, and the genetic legacy that gave the house its heir.

The ambassador and his family#

Cammar Pilru represented Ix at the Imperial Court on Kaitain, attending to diplomatic duties with the Emperor and a thousand functionaries of the capital while his family remained on his homeworld. His wife, S'tina Pilru, was a minor official of the Spacing Guild who worked at the Guild Embassy Building in Vernii, the great subterranean city of Ix. Their identical twin sons, C'tair and D'murr, born in 10136 AG, lived with their mother in one of the wings of the Grand Palais and were groomed through their teenage years for entry into the Guild.

The family's ambitions came to their crossroads when the twins took the Guild's final test. D'murr opened his mind under the melange and was absorbed into the Navigator hierarchy, lost to his parents forever. C'tair failed and remained on Ix. Within weeks, the world the ambassador served would cease to exist in any form he recognized.

The Suboid Revolt and the fall of Ix#

In 10153 AG the deeply religious suboid labor class of Ix, fearful that the machines House Vernius ordered them to build violated the prime commandment of the Butlerian Jihad, rose in rebellion. The Suboid Revolt was no spontaneous uprising: agents of the Bene Tleilax had spent months stirring the unrest, and Emperor Elrood Corrino IX had privately granted them Ix as the site of their secret synthetic melange research. During the initial attacks on Vernii, a massive bomb dislodged the Guild Embassy Building from the stalactite ceiling of the cavern city. Nearly everyone inside was killed, and S'tina Pilru's body was never recovered.

On Kaitain, the Ixian courier Yuta Brey arrived by express heighliner to plead for Imperial help. Ambassador Pilru welcomed her, though her memorized message was intended for the Emperor alone. Together they were summoned to an audience with Elrood, standing opposite Mofra Tooy of the Tleilaxu, who claimed the Ixians had violated the Butlerian Jihad and that the Tleilaxu had been forced to stop them. Pilru pleaded with the Emperor to send Sardaukar troops to aid House Vernius. He did not know that Elrood had secretly backed the invasion, and that Sardaukar were already on Ix helping to oust the Vernius family. The Emperor granted the Tleilaxu two days to compile their evidence, citing the Jihad Appendix of the Great Convention. Enraged by the Imperial indifference, Pilru planned to call a Security Council meeting within the Landsraad, but the underworld of Ix had already fallen. Dominic Vernius and Lady Shando Vernius declared their house renegade and vanished into hiding, leaving their ambassador with no government to represent.

An embassy in exile#

The Tleilaxu cemented their rule over the conquered planet and renamed it Xuttah, but Cammar Pilru never accepted the name or the conquest. He maintained a form of Ixian mission in exile on Kaitain, the last official remnant of the old order. His efforts to rally the Landsraad to retake Ix repeatedly failed: the Tleilaxu justified their seizure by accusing the Ixians of building thinking machines, and because Ix's internal affairs had always been closed to the rest of the Imperium, there was no open knowledge of the Sardaukar presence to expose the Emperor's hand.

What the ambassador could not win by fleet or vote, he won in smaller ways. He helped see the lives of the Vernius children spared, and Rhombur and Kailea Vernius found sanctuary with House Atreides on Caladan. In 10156 AG, when the young Duke Leto Atreides I, who had testified before the Landsraad on behalf of the deposed House Vernius, faced a Trial by Forfeiture over the destruction of a Tleilaxu vessel inside a Guild heighliner, the exiled ambassador offered him two brilliant attorneys from the continent of Ellaca on Ecaz, Clere Ruitt and Bruda Viol, to conduct his defense. Leto was proclaimed innocent, and the friend of House Vernius kept both his life and his dukedom.

Tyros Reffa and the heir of House Vernius#

Some twenty years into the occupation, during the upheaval of Shaddam IV's Great Spice War, Pilru learned a secret of the Imperial bloodline: Tyros Reffa, raised quietly under House Taligari, was the illegitimate son of Elrood IX and Lady Shando Vernius, which made him half brother to both Emperor Shaddam IV and Prince Rhombur. After Shaddam ordered Reffa's adopted world of Zanovar blackened from orbit, Reffa traveled to Kaitain with a Jongleur troupe and, during a performance before the court, inadvertently fired a ruby laser staff and killed a Sardaukar bodyguard beside the Emperor.

Reffa was seized at once, and it was Cammar Pilru who visited him in the Imperial Prison on Kaitain during his short incarceration. The ambassador smuggled out a recording of the speech Reffa had written, and he took skin samples of the prisoner's DNA before Shaddam executed his half brother with the same ruby laser staff. The smuggled speech became a weapon in its own right: it was later used to blackmail the Emperor into paying restitution to Ix.

The skin samples became something greater. After House Vernius was restored to Ix with the help of House Atreides, Rhombur, rendered unable to father children by the skyclipper disaster over Caladan's Western Continent, still needed an heir. His wife, Tessia Vernius, agreed to conceive a child using Tyros Reffa's DNA. The boy, born in 10175 AG and raised as Rhombur's adopted son, was named Bronso, and through him the line of Shando Vernius returned to the Grand Palais. The ambassador who had watched his planet stolen, his wife killed, and his sons scattered had preserved, in the end, the future of the house he served.
