Tessia Vernius

Tessia Vernius, born Tessia Yasco al-Reill, was a Bene Gesserit acolyte and Sister who became the consort and later wife of Earl Rhombur Vernius of Ix. Prepared from childhood in Bene Gesserit training, she devoted her adult life to the displaced Vernius heir, standing as his strength through exile, mutilation, and the long struggle to restore House Vernius.

Consort of Rhombur#

Tessia was chosen by Rhombur Vernius to be his concubine when he and Duke Leto Atreides I arrived on Wallach IX so that Rhombur could select a mate. She won Rhombur's heart from their very first encounter. As Rhombur lived through the grief of losing the prestige of House Vernius and its fiefdom on the homeworld of Ix, Tessia was a constant source of inspiration and strength to the displaced nobleman.

When Rhombur was tragically scarred in the assassination attempt that Kailea Vernius mounted against Leto, an attack that killed Rhombur's nephew Victor Atreides, Tessia was the first to urge him to find the will to live on.

Restoration of House Vernius#

After House Vernius was re-established on Ix and the Tleilaxu were expelled, the fortunes of Rhombur and Tessia rose with the House. To secure an heir for Vernius, Tessia was impregnated with a preserved sperm sample from Rhombur's dead half-brother, Tyros Reffa, and the resulting child was named Bronso.

When Rhombur and Tessia attended the wedding of Leto to Ilesa Ecaz, their son Bronso had copper-colored hair, and the family seemed very happy. During the gathering Leto proposed sending his son Paul to Ix to continue his studies, as Leto himself had once done. Both Rhombur and Tessia warned Leto that Ix was no longer the place he had visited long before, and that the influence of Earl Vernius over Ixian policy and government was declining as the Technocrats gained power over Ixian society.

Taken by the Sisterhood#

In 10188 AG, Jessica and Paul visited Ix so that Paul could spend time as an exchange student in Vernii City, just as his father had done decades earlier. While there, the Bene Gesserit guilt-caster Stokia and three other Sisters visited Tessia and demanded that she produce more children for the Gesserit breeding program. Tessia refused.

Unbeknownst to Jessica, Stokia then used her psychic powers to put Tessia into a comatose trance, leaving her helpless. Rhombur could do nothing for his wife, and the physician Dr. Yueh was unable to help her as she began to waste away. The Sisterhood demanded that Tessia be taken to Wallach IX, claiming they would nurse and care for her, and in his grief Rhombur let them carry her away.

Many years later, during the rule of Paul Atreides, Tessia remained missing. Her son Bronso, together with his jongleur friends, eventually sneaked into the Wallach IX Mother School and rescued her from the hands of the Bene Gesserit. He then asked Jessica to hide her on Caladan.
