Shando Vernius
Lady of House Vernius
Lady Shando Balut-Vernius was a former concubine of Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX who left the Imperial Court to marry Earl Dominic Vernius of Ix. Mother of Tyros Reffa, Rhombur, and Kailea, she was hunted down and executed by Sardaukar when House Vernius fell.
Lady Shando Balut-Vernius (d. 10154 AG) was a member of House Vernius, the wife of Earl Dominic Vernius of Ix, and a former concubine of the 80th Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX. She was the mother of three children: the secret son Tyros Reffa, and the Vernius heirs Rhombur and Kailea. Her decision to leave the Imperial Court for an honest marriage earned the lasting resentment of an emperor whose grudge would help bring House Vernius to ruin.
Imperial concubine#
Shando served as a concubine of the 80th Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX in the Imperial harem on the planet Kaitain. Small-boned and petite, she had a fragile, porcelain-doll appearance, finely chiseled features, a delicately pointed nose, and creamy skin that gave her a regal beauty. The slight and delicate impression she made at first glance concealed a real toughness and resilience.
Around 10130 AG, Earl Dominic Vernius and Duke Paulus Atreides fought together as allies of Elrood in the Ecazi Revolt. During this period Shando bore Dominic an illegitimate son, Tyros Reffa, who was secretly given over for adoption on Zanovar and raised by House Taligari. Dominic and Shando had fallen in love and kept their relationship hidden for many months.
After five years Elrood had plainly lost interest in her, and when she asked to be freed from service and to leave the court, the emperor complied, perplexed but untroubled by so simple a request. He thought of her fondly, recalling the multilingual word puzzles they had enjoyed together. As a commoner she was never a candidate for marriage to him. The other concubines judged her foolish for giving up such riches and pampering, but Shando had wearied of the lavish life and wanted instead a real marriage and children of her own.
Marriage and death#
As soon as she was freed from Imperial service, Dominic Vernius married her in 10138 AG. They completed their vows with minimal pomp and ceremony but with airtight legality. When Elrood learned that another man wanted her, his wounded pride made him reverse his judgment, but it was too late. The emperor petitioned the Landsraad, which refused to act, since Dominic had lawfully married her and Elrood had never intended to do so himself. The emperor nursed his resentment for years afterward, growing paranoid about what bedroom secrets Shando might be sharing with her husband.
In 10153 AG the still-vengeful Imperial throne sponsored a Suboid Revolt against the rulers of Ix and a Tleilaxu invasion of the planet. House Vernius was forced to go renegade as Sardaukar landed on Ix and advanced on Vernii City under the pretext of keeping the peace. Dominic managed to escape to Arrakis, and the two children took refuge on Caladan. Lady Shando, left behind, was hunted down by the Sardaukar and brutally executed on the planet Bela Tegeuse in 10154 AG.
