Maula pistol: the Fremen poison-dart gun of Dune
The maula pistol is a spring-loaded gun that fires poison darts, with a range of about forty metres. It is a small detail in Frank Herbert's Dune, but it makes sense on Arrakis, where shields draw sandworms and an old-fashioned dart gun still kills.
A maula pistol is a spring-loaded gun that fires poison darts, with an effective range of about forty metres. It belongs to the world of Frank Herbert's Dune, where most firearms have been made close to useless by the personal shield, and it survives because the place it is used most, the desert of Arrakis, is the one place shields are a liability. (Dune (appendix))
What is a maula pistol?#
The maula pistol is a spring gun that fires poison darts to about forty metres. That's the whole definition Herbert gives in the Terminology of the Imperium printed at the back of Dune, and the novels never add a technical breakdown. There's no mention of a magazine, a rate of fire or what poison the darts carry. It's a small, quiet, short-range killer. (Dune (appendix))
The same glossary lists maula on its own as a word meaning slave. Herbert doesn't link the two entries, so whether the pistol's name means something like "slave gun" is guesswork, and nothing in the books settles it. (Dune (appendix))
Why a dart gun still works in the shield age#
Shields are the reason a weapon this simple still matters. A Holtzman shield stops anything moving fast, so bullets bounce off, while a slow blade can push through. That's why the nobles of the Imperium fight with knives, and why projectile weapons fell out of use among the Great Houses. (Dune; Dune (appendix))
Arrakis flips that logic. A working shield in the open desert draws a sandworm and sends it into a frenzy, so nobody who knows the desert wears one out on the sand. Against an unshielded target, a spring-fired poison dart is all you need. It's also far safer than a lasgun, whose beam causes a blast like an atomic explosion if it hits a shield. (Dune; Dune (appendix))
Who uses the maula pistol?#
The Fremen are the people most associated with it. They live without shields, they fight in close country among rocks and dunes, and they need light gear they can carry for days alongside the crysknife and the tools of a fremkit. The maula pistol fits all of that, and it appears in Dune and again in Children of Dune, where one lies exposed in the folds of a man's black cloth. (Dune; Children of Dune)
John Schoenherr's art for The Illustrated Dune, the 1978 illustrated edition, shows Chani aiming one, which gives the weapon a look the novel itself never describes. (The Illustrated Dune)
The maula pistol in the prequel novels#
The prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson use the pistol more often, and outside Arrakis. In Dune: House Atreides, Lady Shando Vernius is wounded by a maula pistol during the suboid revolt on Ix. Later in the same book, during Leto Atreides' trial by forfeiture on Kaitain, Thufir Hawat hides a smuggled maula pistol in a desk drawer in his Duke's quarters, in case the next assassin isn't stopped by a knife. (Dune: House Atreides)
Navigators of Dune sets the weapon thousands of years earlier, after the Butlerian Jihad. A desert man named Taref uses a maula pistol to shoot the Butlerian leader Manford Torondo in Arrakis City, only for it to turn out he has killed a body double. These are later additions to the setting, not part of Frank Herbert's own books. (Navigators of Dune)
The maula pistol in Dune (2021)#
Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film gives the weapon its clearest screen moment. Paul Atreides is shown aiming a compact maula pistol while dressed in his stillsuit, which fits the book's idea of it as desert gear rather than a soldier's rifle. (Dune (2021))
Frequently asked questions
- What is a maula pistol in Dune?
- It is a spring-loaded gun that fires poison darts, with a range of about forty metres. The glossary printed with Dune defines it that way.
- Why do the Fremen use maula pistols instead of lasguns?
- Shields are almost never worn in the open desert because they attract sandworms, so a simple dart gun works fine against an unshielded enemy. It also carries none of the lasgun's risk of a blast if it hits a shield.
- Is the maula pistol in Dune 2021?
- Yes. Paul is seen aiming a compact maula pistol while wearing his stillsuit in Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film.
- What does maula mean in Dune?
- The glossary of Dune gives maula as a separate word meaning slave. Herbert never explains whether the gun was named for it.

Projectile weapons: the old guns of the Imperium
Projectile weapons, firing miniaturised poisoned needles, bolts and darts, were the standard armament of the House Troopers and the militaries of the Imperium. The coming of the Holtzman shield made most of them obsolete, yet the maula pistol, the slow-pellet stunner and the assassin's dartgun endured wherever shields could not be worn.

Crysknife
The crysknife was a knife made from the tooth of a sandworm, the primary weapon of the Fremen of Arrakis. Milky white and double-edged, it was sacred to its bearers and could not be sheathed once drawn until it had drawn blood.

Fremkit
A fremkit was a desert survival kit devised by the Fremen for staying alive in the open desert of Arrakis. Packed with navigation, shelter, wormriding, and water tools, it kept Paul and Jessica Atreides alive after they fled Arrakeen.

Stillsuit
The stillsuit was a full body garment worn in the open desert of Arrakis to reclaim and recycle the wearer's own moisture. Fremen-made suits were the finest, losing only a thimbleful of water a day and allowing survival in the deep desert for weeks.

Arrakis
Arrakis, known as Dune and later as Rakis, was a harsh desert world in the Canopus system and the only natural source of the spice melange. Home to the Fremen and the sandworms, it became the seat of the Atreides empire and the center of the known universe.

Chani
Chani was a Fremen warrior and Sayyadina, daughter of the planetologist Liet-Kynes, and the royal concubine and only true love of Emperor Paul Muad'Dib Atreides. She mothered his children before dying in childbirth at Sietch Tabr.
