Mapes: the Shadout of Arrakeen
The Shadout Mapes was the Fremen head housekeeper of the Imperial Residence at Arrakeen when House Atreides took stewardship of Arrakis. She tested the Lady Jessica against the Fremen prophecy, gifted her a crysknife, and was killed by the traitor Wellington Yueh on the night of the Harkonnen assault.
The Shadout Mapes was the Fremen head housekeeper of the Imperial Residence in the city of Arrakeen when House Atreides assumed stewardship of Arrakis in 10,191 AG. As one of the first Fremen the new rulers met face to face, she became an early link between the Atreides household and the desert people, testing the Lady Jessica against Fremen prophecy and afterward serving her with loyalty. Her title, Shadout, meant "well-dipper," a mark of standing among a people for whom water was the measure of all things.
Meeting with the Lady Jessica#
Mapes was among the first Fremen any of the Atreides encountered on a personal basis after their arrival on Arrakis. She approached the Lady Jessica in the hope of determining whether she was the figure the Fremen prophecies spoke of. In keeping with Fremen custom she kept a crysknife concealed on her person, prepared to kill Jessica at any sign of falsehood.
The exchange ran the other way as well. From Mapes, Jessica learned a great deal about the superstitions and legends seeded among the Fremen by the Missionaria Protectiva, the long Bene Gesserit program of planting protective myth on remote worlds. When Mapes satisfied herself that Jessica was indeed the Bene Gesserit of whom the legends spoke, she gave the crysknife to Jessica rather than turning it against her. The transfer followed proper ritual: Jessica drew a little of Mapes's blood, and Mapes warned her never to let any living outsider see the blade unsheathed.
Warning of a traitor#
Soon afterward Mapes was nearly killed by a hunter-seeker, a small drifting assassination device sent against the ducal heir, Paul. In return for the saving of her life she told Paul that the Fremen knew a traitor moved among the Atreides. She did not know the traitor's identity, only that the betrayal was coming.
Death at Arrakeen#
When the Harkonnen assault fell on Arrakeen, the Atreides Suk doctor Wellington Yueh carried out his betrayal and disabled the House shields. In the chaos he stabbed Mapes as she tried to reach Duke Leto with a warning. She died there in 10,191 AG, among the first of the household to fall on the night the Atreides were broken on Arrakis. The crysknife she had given Jessica passed on with the survivors into the desert.
