Shadout Mapes
the Fremen housekeeper of Arrakeen
The Shadout Mapes was the Fremen head housekeeper of the Imperial Residence at Arrakeen when House Atreides took control of Arrakis. She gave Lady Jessica a crysknife in recognition of Fremen prophecy and died trying to warn Duke Leto of the betrayal.
The Shadout Mapes was the head housekeeper of the Imperial Residence in the city of Arrakeen on Arrakis when House Atreides took control of the planet in 10191 A.G. A Fremen in service within the residence, she was among the first of her people the Atreides met face to face, and her brief acquaintance with Lady Jessica opened the household's first understanding of the desert folk.
The crysknife and the prophecy#
Mapes was one of the first Fremen any of the Atreides met on a personal basis after their arrival on Arrakis. She approached the Lady Jessica in the hope of learning whether she was the woman the Fremen prophecies spoke of, and in their exchange Jessica drew from her a great deal about Fremen superstition and legend, the beliefs planted on Arrakis long before by the Bene Gesserit through their Missionaria Protectiva.
In true Fremen fashion, Mapes kept a crysknife concealed on her person, ready to slay Jessica at any sign of falsehood. When she judged that Jessica was indeed the Bene Gesserit the legends named, she gave the blade to Jessica instead, who kept it on her thereafter, drawing some of Mapes' blood in the proper ritual and being warned never to let any living outsider see the knife unsheathed.
Warning and death#
Soon after, Mapes was nearly killed by a hunter-seeker meant for the ducal heir, Paul. In return for the saving of her life, she told Paul that the Fremen knew a traitor was among the Atreides, though she did not know the traitor's identity. When the Suk doctor Wellington Yueh disabled the house shields on the night of the Harkonnen attack, he stabbed Mapes, and she died trying to warn Duke Leto.
