Imperial Conditioning: the pyretic conscience of the Suk doctors

Imperial Conditioning was a psychotherapeutic technique developed by the Suk Medical School, the highest known conditioning against taking human life or even against harbouring such an intention. It was what allowed a physician to be admitted to the private chambers of the most powerful people in the Imperium, up to and including the Emperor himself, in an age when kanly made every household suspicious of every servant. The conditioning held for millennia and was believed impossible to remove without killing the subject, until the twisted Mentat Piter de Vries found a way to burn it out of Dr Wellington Yueh and used the result to destroy House Atreides. A school born out of the Jihad#

In Dune, Reverend Mother Mohiam tells Paul that the Butlerian Jihad took away a crutch and forced human minds to develop, and that schools were started to train human talents. The Mentat order and the Bene Gesserit are two of them; the Suk Medical School, whose physicians attend the great Houses, is another. (Dune)

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson give the school a founder. In their account Mohandas Suk set it up after fighting the Rossak Epidemic alongside Raquella Berto-Anirul, gathering the best researchers and doctors he could find on the principle that important victories are won in hospitals as much as on battlefields. The conscience of fire#

What separated a Suk graduate from any other skilled physician was the conditioning. Imperial Conditioning instilled extreme levels of pacifist inhibition, known as the pyretic conscience or conscience of fire, which was touched off by any intent to kill. Dune's glossary calls it the highest conditioning against taking human life, and it was assumed across the Imperium that it couldn't be removed without killing the person who carried it. (Dune)

The practical value of this was enormous. In a time thick with kanly and assassination, a Great House needed at least one attendant who could not be turned, and the conditioning meant a Suk doctor could never be used as an assassin. That is why Thufir Hawat never seriously suspects Yueh. (Dune)

The marks of a conditioned physician#

Initiates of the programme were marked by a diamond tattoo on the forehead and were permitted to wear their hair long, bound by a silver Suk School ring. Both marks told a household that the physician in front of it had passed through Imperial Conditioning. (Dune)

The Suk tradition outlived the Corrino era by a long stretch. Suk doctors still turn up during the war between the Bene Gesserit and the Honored Matres, thousands of years after Yueh. (Chapterhouse: Dune)

The breaking of Wellington Yueh#

Wellington Yueh, the Atreides family doctor, graduated from the Suk School in 10,112 and was married to a Bene Gesserit, Wanna Marcus. He served in the household of Duke Leto Atreides I with the diamond on his forehead and his long hair caught in the silver ring. (Dune)

Piter de Vries, the twisted Mentat of House Harkonnen, reasoned that the pyretic conscience could be overridden rather than removed. If a conditioned man could be driven to a sufficient extreme of murderous hatred, the inhibitors would burn out under the load. The Harkonnens took Wanna, and Yueh pictured her in Piter's pain amplifiers. Yueh's grief and hatred grew until he genuinely wished to kill the people who had done this, and was willing to kill anyone who stood between him and that end. The conditioning had not been dissolved. It had been overwhelmed. Yueh tells the Duke he finds it very strange himself: an override on his pyretic conscience, and a man he actually wishes to kill. Told that the doctor had become pliable, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen offered Yueh his wife's freedom in exchange for the Duke and his family. Harkonnen agents pointed Thufir Hawat at Lady Jessica instead, and Hawat saw no reason to test a Suk graduate whose conditioning he trusted. On Arrakis, Yueh killed guards and lookouts inside the Arrakeen residency, sabotaged the main shield generator, and left the compound open to the Harkonnen and Sardaukar assault. (Dune)

The tooth and after#

Yueh turned the arrangement against the men who had made it. He disabled the Duke with a tranquilliser dart, then replaced Leto's peg tooth with a hollow replica carrying a scanner-proof core of airborne poison. Reading the Baron's manner when they met, he understood that Wanna had been dead for some time and that the promised exchange had never existed. Piter killed him in the aftermath. When Leto crushed the tooth in the dining hall, the gas took Piter's life and came close to taking the Baron's. (Dune)

The betrayal was ugly in its details, including the killing of house guards and of the Fremen housekeeper, the Shadout Mapes. Frank Herbert never says what the Suk School made of it, but Suk doctors were still being trusted and employed thousands of years later. (Dune; Chapterhouse: Dune)
