Wanna Marcus: the Bene Gesserit whose torment broke a Suk doctor

Wanna Marcus (10092 AG to 10186 AG, the year of her death never confirmed) was an adept of the Bene Gesserit and the wife of Dr. Wellington Yueh, a graduate of the Suk School who served as personal physician to Duke Leto Atreides I. She appeared in the chronicles of the Imperium almost entirely through her absence. Abducted by agents of House Harkonnen and tortured before her husband's eyes, she became the lever by which the Twisted Mentat Piter de Vries broke Yueh's Imperial Conditioning, a feat the Imperium had held to be impossible without killing the subject. Her presumed murder, and the Baron's lie that she still lived, set in motion the betrayal that delivered House Atreides to its enemies on Arrakis.

A Sister wed to a Suk doctor#

Wanna Marcus was born in 10092 AG and trained as an adept of the Bene Gesserit. Her marriage joined her to one of the Imperium's most trusted institutions: Wellington Yueh graduated from the Suk Medical School in 10112 AG and bore on his forehead the diamond tattoo of Imperial Conditioning, the mark that guaranteed a Suk doctor could never take a human life or even consider such an act. That guarantee was the foundation of the school's reputation, and it was why the Great Houses admitted Suk physicians into their innermost councils without question.

Within the marriage, Wanna remained a teacher as much as a wife. She schooled Yueh in the Bene Gesserit arts of reading people, lessons that served him at the end of his life in the most bitter way imaginable. Her influence and her Sisterhood's conditioning bound the doctor to her with a depth that outsiders could not measure, a devotion that his enemies would later weigh with great precision. When Yueh entered the service of Duke Leto Atreides as his personal physician, Wanna's fate became entangled with that of the House her husband served.

The breaking of the unbreakable conditioning#

The Imperial Conditioning of the Suk School was renowned across the Imperium as inviolable. The truth discovered in the Harkonnen dungeons was narrower and uglier: the conditioning could fail if the initiate was driven to a level of murderous hatred extreme enough to burn out its inhibitors. Piter de Vries, the Twisted Mentat of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, set out to reach that threshold through Wanna Marcus.

Sometime during the 10180s, Harkonnen agents abducted Wanna. Yueh was forced to witness her torture in Piter's pain amplifiers, watching his wife's agonized groveling under the Mentat's instruments. The ordeal was calculated. The Baron and his Mentat understood that the strength of Yueh's love for his Bene Gesserit wife, deepened by her influence and conditioning, was the one force in him greater than the conditioning of the Suk School. Yueh's grief and hatred intensified until he harbored murderous intent toward her tormenters and toward anyone who stood in his way, a burning psychosis that overrode the pyretic inhibitors the High College had set in his mind. The thing believed impossible without killing the victim had been done, and the victim still breathed.

The Baron's lie and the fall of House Atreides#

With the doctor's conditioning broken, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen offered his bargain: Wanna's freedom in exchange for the Duke and his family. Yueh reasoned that his wife would likely be dead by the time his treachery was complete, yet he could not act on reason alone. He had to be certain she no longer suffered, and the betrayal offered him his single opportunity for revenge against the men who had taken her. The Baron, for his part, had already given the order for her death, and lied that she lived so that Yueh would finish his work.

The lie held. Within the Atreides household, suspicion of treachery fell not on the Suk doctor but on the Lady Jessica, toward whom Harkonnen agents had planted evidence. The Mentat Thufir Hawat saw no reason to test Yueh, whose conditioning by the High College placed him beyond doubt, and Jessica herself cited the hatred she and the doctor shared for House Harkonnen over the murder of his Bene Gesserit wife. Wanna's presumed death was known in Arrakeen, and it served as Yueh's shield.

When the Harkonnen legions and the Emperor's Sardaukar fell upon Arrakeen, Yueh sabotaged the shield generator of the governor's mansion, drugged the Duke, and placed a poison tooth in his mouth. Brought before the Baron with his prisoner, Yueh applied the last of Wanna's lessons. Reading the Baron's demeanor as she had taught him, he saw that his wife was long dead and no longer existed even as a bargaining chip. He accepted Piter's blade with that certainty, and moments later the Duke's crushed tooth filled the room with poison gas. The Baron escaped; Piter de Vries, the man who had kidnapped, tortured, and murdered Wanna Marcus, did not. In death, her husband had avenged her.

Contested accounts of her fate#

No chronicle ever established with certainty when Wanna Marcus died, or whether Yueh knew. Accounts preserved outside the main record, of disputed authority, filled the silence with claims that reached from her girlhood to decades after her disappearance.

The journals attributed to Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam described Wanna as extremely talented, above all in truthtrance and truthsaying, and held that she was being groomed as a Truthsayer with a possible seat on the Cogita Vera Council. By this account, Mohiam's discovery of the young Paul Atreides and her conviction that the time of the Kwisatz Haderach had come led the Sisterhood to redirect Wanna's service, selecting her to act as a decoy in the collision it foresaw between Atreides and Harkonnen. She was told, these accounts said, that her sacrifice would hasten the coming of the Kwisatz Haderach, and the Sisters of her Chapter House mourned her afterward with quiet affection.

The Princess Irulan maintained that Yueh's motive was never his wife's freedom but the need to put to rest his private doubts about her death, and that when he delivered Duke Leto to the Baron he learned she had been dead a long time. Against this, when Bronso of Ix claimed that Yueh was innocent of the treachery, the priesthood silenced him as part of an alleged Ixian plot, and the Ixians answered by releasing a fragment of a Spacing Guild bill of passage recording a party of "four Sardaukar and one female of the Bene..." traveling to Caladan some four months before the Atreides household departed for Arrakis. The priesthood held that Yueh met that transport and saw Wanna alive under guard, and betrayed his Duke to free her. Skeptics noted the fragment could have been forged, and some scholars proposed that the fifth traveler, if the party existed at all, was not Wanna but a Tleilaxu Face Dancer hired to deceive a doctor who had never been trained to detect one. The fragment settled nothing, and historians conceded it raised more problems than it answered.

Legacy#

Wanna Marcus was remembered, where she was remembered at all, as an innocent caught in the Harkonnen net of pride and revenge, and in the later tellings as an instrument the Sisterhood spent toward the rule it had awaited for millennia. The dramatist Harq al-Harba celebrated her blameless life and tragic death in History of Duke Leto, Part II. Her true monument was written in other lives: in the broken conditioning of her husband, in the fall of Duke Leto Atreides, and in the escape of Paul and Jessica into the deep desert, which Yueh arranged in her name as his last act of loyalty and remorse.
