Raquella Berto-Anirul was the first Reverend Mother and the founder and first Mother Superior of the order that would become the Bene Gesserit. The daughter of Helmina Berto-Anirul, herself the illegitimate daughter of Vorian Atreides and Karida Julan, Raquella began as a physician serving the war-injured and the diseased in the aftermath of the Butlerian Jihad. A transformative poisoning on Rossak unlocked the latent powers of the Reverend Mothers within her, and she reshaped the Sisterhood of Rossak into a disciplined new order whose breeding programs and orations laid the foundation of the Sisterhood for millennia to come.

A physician of the Jihad era#

In her late teens Raquella married a jihadi soldier who died in the war soon afterward. She then became a doctor and devoted herself to helping the war-injured and those suffering from the deadly diseases that still afflicted humanity, living on Parmentier alongside Dr. Mohandas Suk. During the Omnius Scourge the two worked together at the Hospital for Incurable Diseases. It was there, while reflecting on the recently deceased Dr. Hundri Arbar, that Raquella noticed the effect of spice on the disease; a brief investigation showed her that melange benefited and even immunized the patients. She brought this to the attention of Vorian Atreides, who carried the news to the League Parliament.

When Martyrists assaulted and disabled the hospital's machinery, Raquella and Mohandas retreated to a remote Jewish village, helping its people through the Scourge until a paranoid mob burned the town, blaming the Jews and the thinking machines for the epidemic. Accompanied by some of the villagers, who hid their identities, the two physicians continued their work. Vorian later rediscovered her location and generously supplied whatever aid and equipment she needed, including guards for protection. He recruited the couple to the Humanities Medical Commission and purchased the hospital spaceship LS Recovery so they could work more efficiently.

Transformation on Rossak#

Raquella's life was transformed when she travelled to Rossak to help the Sorceresses combat the Rossak Epidemic, a new strain of the Scourge. She descended to the surface with Nortie Vandego while Suk remained in orbit studying samples. Her early efforts failed, owing partly to the nature of the virus and partly to the fierce opposition she met from the Sorceresses, chiefly the skeptical Ticia Cenva. On Rossak she befriended Jimmak Tero, Cenva's Misborn son.

After contracting the Scourge herself, Raquella was treated by members of the Misborn with water conditioned by native Rossak flora. She fully recovered, but the ordeal also unleashed dormant genetic abilities; her body had been altered by the virus after assimilating the strange mixture of environmental chemicals. With these new powers deep within her cells, she was later able to neutralize a poison, the Rossak drug administered to her by the sickly Ticia Cenva, synthesizing an antidote from her own internal chemistry. She used that same ability to destroy the Rossak Epidemic itself, becoming the first true Reverend Mother.

Reverend Mother Superior#

After Ticia Cenva's death, Raquella took control of the Sorceresses and began reforming them and their breeding program into what would become the Bene Gesserit. With a body of desperate and pliable acolytes she travelled to Wallach IX, where she delivered her legendary orations to the embryonic Sisterhood of Rossak. The sprawling Mother School was built there to house the growing order.

Raquella intended to be succeeded as Reverend Mother Superior by both her granddaughter Dorotea and her right hand, Reverend Mother Valya Harkonnen. Upon her peaceful death, however, Valya used the power of Voice to force Dorotea to take her own life, ensuring that leadership of the Sisterhood passed to Valya alone. Raquella was revered long thereafter; ten millennia later her distant descendant, the Kwisatz Mother Anirul Sadow Tonkin, was named in her honour.
