Esmar Tuek

spice smuggler of Arrakis

Esmar Tuek was a cunning spice smuggler of Arrakis with secret ties to the Fremen, who reached an accommodation with Duke Leto Atreides and was killed by the traitor Wellington Yueh during the fall of House Atreides.

By Joe Garratt

Esmar Tuek was a spice smuggler in the days of Muad'Dib, operating out of the polar regions of Arrakis. A cunning and astute businessman, he ran spice off the planet for profit and kept secret arrangements with the Fremen, both to enrich himself and to undermine the rule of House Harkonnen.

Smuggler of the polar regions#

Tuek's operation was based in the polar regions of Arrakis, and for many years he was responsible for smuggling spice off the planet for profit. A cunning and astute businessman, he held secret arrangements with the Fremen, which served both as a source of profit and as a means of undermining the Harkonnen regime. When the Harkonnens were replaced by House Atreides on the Emperor's order, Duke Leto Atreides convinced Tuek and his band that the Atreides would ignore their operations in return for a percentage of their profits.

At the Duke's table#

At the suggestion of the Lady Jessica, who sought to sow doubt among the Duke's enemies on Arrakis, Tuek was invited to a formal dinner hosted by Leto. During the meal the Duke was called away when Harkonnen spies tried to sell a stolen Atreides carryall to the smugglers, and Tuek's men, on his orders, delivered both the spies and the carryall to Atreides authorities, earning the Duke's gratitude. With Leto gone, the young Paul was left as host and was challenged by a Guild banker in Harkonnen employ. Tuek, together with the planetologist Kynes, broke into the verbal duel and helped leave the banker thoroughly embarrassed.

Death and legacy#

When House Atreides was attacked and the Duke killed, Tuek met an unlucky death, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, stabbed along with the Atreides housekeeper Mapes by the traitorous Suk doctor Wellington Yueh. The Atreides Warmaster Gurney Halleck escaped with a handful of survivors and fell in with Tuek's son Staban and his men, remaining among them for two years. The Tuek line endured on Arrakis: a distant but direct descendant, Hedley Tuek, served as High Priest of the Rakian priesthood some five thousand years after Esmar's time.
