Carryall: the lifter of the spice harvest
The carryall was a large winged aircraft used by spice mining teams on Arrakis. It ferried harvesters across the sand and, above all, lifted them clear when a sandworm came, making it indispensable to spice production.
The carryall was a large winged, planet-bound aircraft used by the spice mining crews of Arrakis. Crewed by about six spice miners, called dunemen, it carried spice harvesters across the desert and lifted them clear of the open sand. More than any other machine, the carryall was what made the harvesting of melange possible, for it was the only tool that could pluck a heavy harvester to safety when a sandworm came.
Role in spice mining#
Carryalls were a vital part of spice production. Spotters were sent ahead to locate a spice blow, the eruption of fresh melange to the surface, while the carryall lifted the harvesters from the ground and set them down on the spice to mine it. The same spotters watched for wormsign, the electrical charges and ripples in the sand that betrayed a sandworm on the move.
The carryall's most important duty followed from a hard fact of Arrakis: sandworms attacked all rhythmic vibration, and a working harvester threw off a great deal of it. A worm could come at any time, so the carryall stood ready to lift the harvester to safety the moment one appeared. A harvester left too long on the sand was a harvester lost, swallowed whole.
Condition under House Atreides#
When House Atreides took control of Arrakis, there were just over a thousand carryalls in the equipment inventory left behind by the previous administration. The vast majority were in dire need of repair. Once the unserviceable machines were set aside, only about a third of the number required to cover all the harvesters remained, a shortfall that put the whole spice operation under strain and the mining crews at greater risk.
The stolen carryall#
On one occasion a party that included Duke Leto Atreides was nearly killed when a worm attacked a harvester the group had come to observe. A Harkonnen agent planted among the crew had overpowered the others and attempted to offload the carryall to spice smugglers. The smugglers in question were men of Esmar Tuek, and rather than take the prize they turned both the agent and the carryall over to Atreides forces. The gesture earned Tuek the gratitude of the Lady Jessica.
Frequently asked questions
- What was a carryall in Dune?
- A carryall was a large winged, planet-bound aircraft used by the spice mining teams of Arrakis. Crewed by about six spice miners, it carried harvesters from one site to another and lifted them clear of the sand when a sandworm threatened.
- Why were carryalls vital to spice production?
- Because sandworms were drawn to the rhythmic vibrations a harvester made while mining, a worm attack was a constant danger. The carryall was the only means of snatching a heavy harvester to safety in time, so without enough working carryalls spice operations could not be run safely.
- How many carryalls did House Atreides inherit on Arrakis?
- When House Atreides took control of Arrakis there were just over a thousand carryalls in the equipment inventory, but most were in dire need of repair. Only about a third of the number required to cover all the harvesters was actually serviceable.
