Dominic Vernius was the penultimate true Earl of House Vernius and ruler of the machine world of Ix. He married Lady Shando Balut, a former imperial concubine, with whom he had his legitimate children Rhombur and Kailea, as well as an illegitimate son named Tyros Reffa. Once a decorated ally of the Padishah Emperor, he was driven into renegade exile by imperial enmity and a Tleilaxu invasion, and he ended his life detonating a stone burner against the Sardaukar on Arrakis.

Service and imperial favor#

While still a young man, Dominic lent Ixian forces to Padishah Emperor Elrood IX to help put down the Ecazi Revolt and restore Archduke Ferdinand Ecaz to the Mahogany Throne. During this campaign he met and befriended Duke Paulus Atreides of Caladan. As a reward for his loyal service, the Emperor expanded the Vernius fief to include several more planets of the Alkaurops system, and Dominic became a popular and welcome guest at the Imperial court, its balls, and its other events.

Marriage to Shando and the Emperor's enmity#

At a celebration on Caladan, Dominic met the Emperor's concubine, Shando Balut. They fell in love and produced an illegitimate child, later named Tyros Reffa. Elrood had by then grown tired of Shando in favor of younger concubines and granted her request to be released from concubinage. Dominic and Shando wed at once, earning Elrood's lasting enmity. Dominic compounded the offense by treating the Emperor cordially, as an equal, and addressing him as "Roody," a private pet name Shando had used. That she had shared this confirmed Elrood's suspicion that she did not respect their privacy and may have revealed other imperial secrets to the ruler of Ix. After the marriage, the couple had two more children, Rhombur and Kailea.

The fall of House Vernius#

Years later, House Vernius produced a new Heighliner design with greater capacity. Because imperial tax was assessed on the number of flights rather than the volume of cargo, the redesign sharply reduced income for House Corrino and again provoked Elrood's wrath. The Emperor threatened to break the Landsraad agreement and conduct an inspection of Ix, ostensibly to determine whether Ixian scientists were developing illegal thinking machines in violation of the Butlerian Jihad and to investigate the treatment of the suboid working class.

In 10153 AG, Elrood sponsored a suboid revolt against the leaders of Ix together with a Bene Tleilax invasion. During the uprising, Shando was injured by a maula pistol while trying to protect Kailea. The couple retreated to a secret security chamber where their son Rhombur and his guest, Leto of House Atreides, were waiting, telling the children that House Vernius was forced to go renegade as Sardaukar forces landed and advanced on Vernii City under the pretext of keeping the peace. While Duke Paulus Atreides arranged a rescue for the three young heirs, Dominic and Shando paid a large bribe to the Spacing Guild to board a Heighliner into exile, with no record kept of their destinations.

Renegade years and death#

The Earl established hidden bases on Salusa Secundus and Arrakis. His ambassador Cammar Pilru sought Landsraad support to retake Ix, but the Tleilaxu justified their actions by accusing the Ixians of building thinking machines, and because Ix's internal affairs were closed off to the rest of the Imperium there was no open knowledge of the Sardaukar presence. The Vernius children were sent in secret to Caladan under the protection of Paulus Atreides. Lady Shando was hunted down and executed by Sardaukar on Bela Tegeuse, while Dominic hid on Arrakis with a band of loyal men. From there he learned that Rhombur was aiding rebels on Ix and that Kailea had become Leto's concubine and borne him a son, Victor.

After many years, Dominic resolved to use the House Vernius atomics to bomb Kaitain and visit upon it the fate of Salusa Secundus. He contacted the water merchant Rondo Tuek, who betrayed him, and Sardaukar forces surrounded his Arrakis base. Rather than be taken, Dominic detonated a stone burner, taking a large number of Sardaukar with him.
