House Ecaz: the Archducal House of the Sculptor's Paradise

Ecaz is Frank Herbert's planet of fogwood and drugs, and House Ecaz is the family that rules it in the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson books. Under Archduke Armand Ecaz the House fought two Wars of Assassins with House Moritani, lost its heirs and left Armand as the last of his line.

By Joe Garratt

House Ecaz is the noble House that rules Ecaz, the fourth planet of Alpha Centauri B, in the Dune books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Its head is the Archduke Armand Ecaz, a friend of Duke Leto Atreides and the bitter enemy of House Moritani. The planet itself is older: Frank Herbert lists it in the glossary of Dune as the sculptor's paradise, home of fogwood. (Dune (appendix); Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

Ecaz in Frank Herbert's Dune#

The planet comes from Frank Herbert. The Terminology of the Imperium printed with Dune places Ecaz as the fourth planet of Alpha Centauri B and calls it the sculptor's paradise, because it is the home of fogwood, a plant that can be shaped where it grows by human thought alone. The same glossary describes verite, the drug that makes a person unable to lie, as one of the Ecaz narcotics. (Dune (appendix))

That's all Frank Herbert says. He doesn't name a ruling family, and Ecaz plays no part in the plot of the six novels. (Dune (appendix))

House Ecaz in the expanded books#

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson give the planet a ruling House headed by an Archduke, who sits on the ancestral Mahogany Throne in the Archducal Palace. Their first story about it is the Ecazi Revolt, when rebels drove Archduke Ferdinand Ecaz from his throne. Emperor Elrood IX sent Sardaukar to put the rising down, and Ixian troops under Dominic Vernius and Atreides troops under Duke Paulus Atreides fought beside them. Ferdinand got his throne back and passed it on to his son Armand. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)

The House's wealth comes from the same plant life Frank Herbert describes. Ecaz sells fogwood, drugs and medicines across the Imperium, and that trade is what later gives Armand a weapon against his enemies: an embargo. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

The feud with House Moritani#

House Ecaz and House Moritani had hated each other for generations. Under Armand it broke out into a War of Assassins. Moritani forces bombarded the Archducal Palace and the Mahogany Throne burned. Armand's eldest daughter and heir, Sanya, who was meant to marry Duke Leto Atreides, was kidnapped and publicly executed on Grumman. (Expanded books: Dune: House Harkonnen; Dune: House Corrino)

The Moritani conduct in that war turned the Swordmasters of Ginaz against Grumman. After a Moritani raid on their school, two of the Swordmasters, Rivvy Dinari and Whitmore Bludd, took service as bodyguards to Armand's household. (Expanded books: Dune: House Harkonnen; Paul of Dune)

Ilesa's wedding and the War of Assassins of 10187 AG#

Armand kept Ecaz's medicines away from Grumman. When Viscount Hundro Moritani's only son fell ill with a disease that only an Ecazi plant could treat, Armand refused to lift the ban and the boy died early in 10187 AG. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

That year Armand offered his last daughter, Ilesa, to Duke Leto. The wedding at Castle Caladan became a massacre. Blades hidden in the hall's potted plants by Prad Vidal, an Ecazi duke secretly working for Moritani, flew at the Ecazi party. Dinari died shielding the Archduke, Armand lost an arm and Ilesa bled to death. Hundro claimed the attack by recorded message, and the War of Assassins of 10187 AG began. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

Leto killed Vidal under the forms of kanly before he could seize Ecaz, then joined Armand at the siege of Ritka, the Moritani capital on Grumman. The Viscount's last trick, atomics buried under the battlefield, failed because his own Swordmaster had left them unarmed, and the Emperor stepped in to stop the war. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

What became of House Ecaz#

Ecaz won. House Moritani collapsed completely and its fiefs, wealth and privileges went to House Ecaz. But Armand had lost all his heirs. He came out of the war maimed and the last of his line, and the cost had drained his treasury as well as Leto's. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

When Paul Atreides took the throne and called on the Landsraad to submit, the old Archduke didn't resist. He sent Whitmore Bludd to Arrakis to remind Paul that he had been Leto's friend and to submit Ecaz to the new Emperor. Paul took Bludd into his service. For the rest of the Houses of the age, see the Great Houses of Dune and the Landsraad. (Expanded books: Paul of Dune)

House Ecaz in the games#

House Ecaz became the sixth playable faction in Dune: Spice Wars with the game's 1.0 release on 14 September 2023. It plays as a political faction that trades in art and culture to gain influence in the Landsraad. The game's leader is the Archduchess Armanda Ecaz, a reimagined version of the books' Archduke. (Dune: Spice Wars)

Dune: Awakening (2025) lists House Ecaz among the 25 Houses of its Landsraad that players can support for rewards. Awakening is set in an alternate history, so its Ecaz doesn't follow the books' timeline. (Dune: Awakening)
