Prad Vidal
traitor Duke of Elacca
Prad Vidal was the Duke of Elacca on Ecaz and a vassal of Archduke Armand Ecaz. A secret ally of House Moritani, he engineered the wedding-day assassination of the Ecazi heiress Ilesa and tried to seize House Ecaz before being killed by Duke Leto Atreides.
Duke Prad Vidal was the Duke of Elacca, a subcontinent on the Ecazi homeworld, and a vassal of Archduke Armand Ecaz. Outwardly loyal to House Ecaz, he was in truth a secret ally of the Harkonnens and an avowed enemy of the Atreides line. He was responsible for the deaths of the Ecazi heiress Ilesa Ecaz and the Swordmaster Rivvy Dinari during the wedding of Ilesa to Duke Leto Atreides I, a betrayal that helped ignite a War of Assassins and ended with his own execution at Leto's hand.
Vassal and secret traitor#
Vidal ruled Elacca as a vassal under Archduke Armand Ecaz, the lawful ruler of Ecaz and an ally of House Atreides. The Archduke had sought to bind the two houses together, having years earlier betrothed his eldest daughter Sanya to Duke Leto, and after her death offering his younger daughter Ilesa in her place. Behind this loyalty, however, Vidal was an ally of the Harkonnens and a sworn enemy of the Old Duke Paulus Atreides. He took part in the scheme of Viscount Hundro Moritani, the great enemy of House Ecaz, to destroy the Archduke and the Atreides household in a single stroke.
The wedding-day massacre#
During the wedding of Ilesa Ecaz and Duke Leto Atreides I at Castle Caladan, Vidal concealed hexagonal blades along the sides of potted plants placed about the ceremony. As the Wedding March began, the sharpened discs rose and circled through the air toward their intended Ecazi targets. The Swordmasters Rivvy Dinari and Whitmore Bludd moved to defend the Archduke and his daughter. One disc, slipping past Bludd's guard, severed Ilesa's carotid artery, and she bled to death. The Archduke lost an arm and barely survived, saved only by Dinari, who shielded his master with his own body and died doing so. As the carnage settled, a message from Viscount Moritani sounded through the hall, opening the War of Assassins of 10,187 AG.
A second attempt followed almost at once, when assassins struck at the wounded Archduke in a tower of Castle Caladan. They were defeated by Duncan Idaho, while other assassins sent against Paul Atreides and Bronso Vernius were stopped by Count Rhombur.
Bid for House Ecaz and death#
Resolved to destroy House Moritani at last, Armand left Caladan for Ecaz to gather his forces, with Duke Leto assembling his own navy and army to escort him. When the Atreides fleet arrived over the Ecazi capital, the people fled in panic, believing themselves invaded. In the confusion, Vidal had already announced that the Archduke and his daughter were dead on Caladan along with much of the Atreides household, proclaiming himself the successor of House Ecaz. By the time Armand reached his palace, Vidal had fled to his estates on Elacca, where he organized the defense of his lands and prepared to provoke a civil war.
Fearing that a drawn-out fight against Vidal's Elaccan troops would give Moritani time to fortify Grumman, Duke Leto proposed the swiftest solution: Vidal's assassination. Disguised as Elaccan guards, Leto and his warrior companion Gurney Halleck entered Vidal's wooden fortress. On finding him, Leto spoke the ritual words that begin a War of Assassins and beheaded the traitor with a blade like those used on the wedding day. After Vidal's death, the Elaccan rebels surrendered when Halleck asked whether they would rather kill their own brothers or the Grummans.
