By Joe Garratt

Ilesa Ecaz was the second eldest daughter of Archduke Armand Ecaz and the intended bride of Duke Leto Atreides I of Caladan. The marriage was arranged to cement the long friendship between House Atreides and House Ecaz, but it ended in bloodshed before the vows were complete, when an enemy House struck at the wedding itself.

The arranged marriage#

In the twelfth year of the life of Paul Atreides, Duke Leto Atreides I resolved at last to commit to a marriage that would strengthen the bond between his House and House Ecaz. The chosen bride was Ilesa, a daughter of his friend and ally Archduke Armand Ecaz. Leto had already declared to the Imperium that Paul was his intended heir, yet the prospect of the marriage was met coolly by his concubine, Jessica.

When Ilesa traveled to Cala City in the days before the wedding, Jessica decided, for the sake of all involved, to set aside her reservations and seek friendship with the young woman. The two were brought together in the period before the ceremony.

Death at Castle Caladan#

A few days later, during the wedding ceremony at Castle Caladan, House Moritani, the long-standing enemy of House Ecaz, opened the War of Assassins of 10187 AG. Hexagonal blades had been cleverly concealed on the sides of potted plants set about the hall. As the Wedding March began, the sharp-edged discs lifted into the air and circled toward their intended targets, Armand and Ilesa.

Rivvy Dinari, the Archduke's personal bodyguard, threw his own body into the paths of the discs aimed at Armand. One was turned aside, but the other sheared off the Archduke's lower left arm. Ilesa's bodyguard, Whitmore Bludd, managed to deflect only one of the discs sent against her and hesitated for an instant, allowing the second to slice into her carotid artery. Ilesa clutched at her neck in an effort to stem the blood but could not, and she bled to death at her own wedding.

Aftermath#

It was at Ilesa's funeral that Leto Atreides began to plot revenge with the Archduke against House Moritani. Her death, together with that of her sister Sanya and their uncle Theo, left House Ecaz without heirs, with Armand standing as the last of his line.
