By Joe Garratt

Sanya Ecaz was the eldest daughter and heiress of Archduke Armand Ecaz and the elder sister of Ilesa Ecaz. Offered in marriage to Duke Leto Atreides I to bind House Atreides and House Ecaz, she was instead seized and killed by the enemies of her House before any union could take place.

Offered to House Atreides#

Although his concubine Kailea Vernius came from a noble, if exiled, family, Duke Leto Atreides I chose not to marry her, holding to his conception of a Duke's duties to both his people and his House. It was at this point that Archduke Armand Ecaz, a friend of House Atreides, offered his eldest daughter and heiress, Sanya, in marriage to the Atreides Duke.

Kidnapping and execution#

The match was overtaken by the renewed conflict between House Ecaz and House Moritani. Sanya was kidnapped by Moritani agents, and on the orders of Viscount Hundro Moritani, her father's enemy, she was publicly executed together with her uncle Theo, Armand's brother. Leto, who had regarded Sanya as an attractive woman, felt genuine sorrow at her death.

A House without heirs#

Years later, in the War of Assassins of 10187 AG, Sanya's younger sister Ilesa, by then the last heiress of House Ecaz, took up the role of bride to Leto Atreides I. Ilesa too was killed, struck down during an assassination attempt at her wedding at Castle Caladan. With the deaths of Sanya and Ilesa, as well as their uncle Theo, House Ecaz lost all its heirs, leaving Archduke Armand as the last surviving member of his family.
