By Joe Garratt

House Ginaz was a Great House of the Landsraad during the era of the Faufreluches, the rigid class system of the Imperium. It was an ally of House Atreides during the time of Duke Leto Atreides, known to history as Leto the Just, and it was defeated in a War of Assassins waged against it by House Moritani of the planet Grumman.

The Swordmaster School#

House Ginaz was renowned throughout the Imperium for its Swordmaster School. Many Great Houses sent a gifted soldier to be trained there, and anyone who graduated was awarded the title Swordmaster of the Ginaz. It was said that to reach the school's Tenth Level was to be a superior warrior in every way, more adept even than the Imperial Sardaukar. Swordmasters were more than mere soldiers; they often served the Houses they were attached to as chief tacticians, military advisors, and tutors to noble families.

During the time of Duke Leto, House Atreides maintained its own Swordmaster in the person of Duncan Idaho. His attachment to the Atreides was characteristic of the House Ginaz tradition, in which a trained Swordmaster carried the discipline of the school into the service of the House that employed him.

Alliance, rivalry, and destruction#

House Ginaz stood as an ally of House Atreides during the rule of Duke Leto the Just. Its enemy was House Moritani, the ruling House of the planet Grumman, with whom it came into a War of Assassins. In that conflict House Ginaz was defeated.

The founder of the line was Alberto Ginaztera, who established the Ginaztera Company and was reckoned the forefather of House Ginaz. Said to have been born on Gioia in the Beta Tau Beta System, the son of a composer, he was trained as a serious musician and singer and was particularly adept with stringed instruments. After his death, his wife Maria-Elisa increased the family's fortunes considerably by smuggling during the travels of their entertainers' troupe and reinvesting the proceeds into what grew into an entertainment empire, from which the House later rose to noble standing.
