Victor Atreides
first son of Duke Leto I
Victor Atreides was the first son of Duke Leto Atreides I and his concubine Kailea Vernius, born on Caladan after the fall of House Vernius. He was killed at the age of six in a skyclipper explosion engineered by his own mother, and his death indirectly led to the conception of Paul Atreides.
Victor Atreides (10168 AG to 10174 AG) was the first son of Duke Leto Atreides I and the half-brother of Paul Atreides and Alia Atreides, though both were born only after his death. His mother was Kailea Vernius, sister to Rhombur Vernius of Ix, and he was conceived and born on Caladan after House Vernius lost its status. His short life ended in an assassination plot aimed at his father, and the grief that followed reshaped the future of House Atreides.
Birth on Caladan#
Leto had desired Kailea throughout his teenage years, especially after she and her brother Rhombur were exiled to Caladan following the Tleilaxu takeover of Ix. For years Kailea lived with Leto in Castle Caladan and was a constant companion to the growing ducal heir. After Leto's father, Duke Paulus Atreides, was gored by a Salusan bull, Leto was forced to exile his own mother, Helena Atreides, to the Eastern Continent for her secret role in the assassination. Through these upheavals, including Leto's Trial by Forfeiture, Kailea remained at his side. The two became intimate, and Victor was conceived and born in Cala City.
A strained household#
Victor's childhood was a happy one, even as relations between his parents grew strained over time. The decline sharpened after Kailea obtained a lady-in-waiting from the Imperial Court on Kaitain named Chiara, who was in truth a spy planted by House Harkonnen. Over a long period Chiara subtly fed Kailea false information and turned her against the Duke. Victor witnessed many arguments between his mother and father as the household fractured around him.
Death in the skyclipper#
Kailea and Chiara eventually plotted to assassinate Leto so that Victor could assume the ducal rights of House Atreides. To set the plan in motion, Kailea seduced Atreides House Guard Captain Swain Goire and stole his keycard to the armory, passing it to Chiara. Chiara took explosives from the armory and placed them aboard the skyclipper that Leto planned to use on a week-long survey of the Western Continent. On the day of the procession, Victor begged to accompany his father, and Rhombur joined as well. As the three of them passed over the settlements north of Cala City, Victor discovered the explosives and accidentally triggered them. He was killed instantly, while Leto and Rhombur were severely wounded.
Aftermath#
When Kailea learned of her son's death, she stabbed Chiara to death with Goire's blade and then threw herself from a tower window of Castle Caladan. Rhombur survived through cyborg implants provided by Doctor Wellington Yueh. Leto was consumed by grief but refused to accept a ghola of Victor offered by the Bene Tleilax, regarding their seizure of Ix as unjust. He eventually recovered enough to lead House Atreides again. It was the depth of Leto's grief over Victor that moved Jessica to conceive a son for him in defiance of the Bene Gesserit breeding program, a decision that brought Paul Atreides into the world.
