Swain Goire: the captain sentenced to live

Swain Goire was a trusted officer of House Atreides who served Duke Leto Atreides I as Captain of the Armory at Cala City on Caladan. Having risen through the ranks of the ducal household to hold charge over every weapon in Castle Caladan, he became the unwitting instrument of the conspiracy that killed the Duke's first son, Victor Atreides, when the boy's mother, Kailea Vernius, seduced him and stole his key to the Atreides armory. Because he had never intended harm, Leto refused to grant him the mercy of execution and instead sentenced him "to live" with the grief he had caused, exiling him to the Abbey of the Sisters in Isolation as bodyguard to the Duke's disgraced mother, Lady Helena Atreides. Thirteen years later, when assassins hunting the young Paul Atreides burned the Abbey, Goire found his atonement at last, giving his life so that Paul and Duncan Idaho could escape into the Caladan jungles.

Captain of the Armory#

Swain Goire rose through the ranks of the household of House Atreides on Caladan until he held one of the most sensitive posts in the Duke's service. As Captain of the Armory based in Cala City, he was placed in charge of all of the weapons of Castle Caladan, from the smallest sidearm to the explosives held in the armaments depot. The post was a mark of the trust Duke Leto Atreides I placed in him, and for years that trust was well founded. Goire was a soldier of the household, loyal to the Atreides line, and nothing in his record suggested he would ever be the cause of its darkest hour.

That hour approached through no ambition of his own. The union between Duke Leto and his concubine Kailea Vernius, the exiled daughter of House Vernius who had borne the Duke his first son, Victor, had begun to spiral into anger and depression for both of them. Kailea, embittered by Leto's refusal to marry her and raise their son's station, turned her attention to the trusted captain who kept the keys to the castle's weapons. She set out to seduce Goire, and she succeeded. The affair gave her something far more valuable than companionship. It gave her access to his belt, and to the key of the Atreides armaments depot that hung there.

The skyclipper plot#

Kailea did not act alone, and by most reckonings did not even act on her own design. Her lady in waiting, Chiara, was a secret spy of House Harkonnen, and under Chiara's misguided influence Kailea resolved to assassinate Leto in a staged crash. With the Duke dead, six year old Victor could assume the ducal rights of House Atreides, and Kailea would rule Caladan as his Regent.

The plot turned on Swain Goire without his knowledge. During one of their trysts, Kailea slipped the armory key out of his belt lock and passed it to Chiara. Goire believed he had simply misplaced the key, and said nothing of the loss for days, a silence that gave the conspirators all the time they required. Leto had scheduled a seasonal tour of the Western Continent of Caladan, intending to travel alone among its villages and hamlets aboard his blimp like skyclipper. On the night before his departure, Chiara let herself into the Armory, removed a large cache of explosives, and rigged them aboard the vessel as a time bomb.

The next day the plan collapsed into something worse than failure. Unbeknownst to Kailea, her brother Rhombur Vernius and little Victor both decided to accompany the Duke on his journey. Soon after the skyclipper rose into the air, Victor happened upon the hidden explosives and set them off. The boy was killed instantly. Rhombur was permanently maimed, his body all but destroyed, and Leto himself was injured. The bomb meant to clear Victor's path to the ducal seat had killed him instead.

Judgment of the Duke#

As the shape of the conspiracy became known, Goire confronted Kailea himself. She offered him only silence and half denials, and that was evidence enough. The captain understood at last how thoroughly he had been used, and what his stolen key had cost the House he served. The reckoning that followed left him with no one to share the blame. Kailea killed Chiara, and then committed suicide, so that when the time came to answer for Victor's death, Swain Goire faced his Duke alone.

Leto's judgment was one of the most severe ever pronounced in Castle Caladan, precisely because it withheld the punishment Goire wanted. Since the captain had never deliberately tried to kill Victor, the Duke would not give him a traitor's death. Instead Leto sentenced Swain "to live" with the grief and misery he had caused the Atreides family. The sentence had a further sting. Goire was exiled to live alongside the Lady Helena Atreides, Leto's own mother, who had been banished years before for her role in the death of Duke Paulus Atreides. The man whose negligence had cost a duke his son would keep company with the woman who had cost a son his father.

Exile among the Sisters in Isolation#

Goire's place of banishment was the Abbey of the Sisters in Isolation, the compound of a religious offshoot of women on Caladan's remote Eastern Continent. The sisters wove tapestries for sale throughout the Imperium and meditated as they worked, many under vows of silence, and all who entered the compound pledged never to return to the outside world. Helena Atreides had been sentenced there near the end of the Corrino era for her part in Paulus's death, and nine years later Goire was sent to join her, condemned for his role in the death of Victor Atreides and the maiming of Prince Rhombur Vernius.

He lived there as bodyguard to the Lady for thirteen years, and for thirteen years nothing happened. The sentence worked exactly as Leto had intended. There was no battle to die in, no enemy to fight, only the daily company of his guilt in a place the wider Imperium had forgotten. In those years Helena rose within the order until she had become Abbess of the religious organization, mistress of the sanctuary that held them both.

The last stand at the Abbey#

The outside world returned in 10,187 AG, when a War of Assassins erupted on Caladan. The Swordmaster Duncan Idaho and twelve year old Paul Atreides, hunted by secret Grumman and Harkonnen assassins in the service of House Moritani's vendetta, fled to the sparsely populated Eastern Continent to seek shelter. At the Abbey they were greeted tersely by the Lady Helena, meeting her grandson for the first time as the cold and distant Abbess, and she granted the pair a few days of refuge.

The hunters of Moritani found them anyway. The assassins fired projectile missiles into the Abbey, bombarding and burning the compound and killing almost everyone inside, the Abbess Helena among them. In that final hour Swain Goire made his choice. Deciding to atone for his part in Victor's death, he single handedly fought the Grumman and Harkonnen assassins, holding them while Duncan and Paul fled into the dense Caladan jungles. Soon after the two escaped into the foliage, Goire was killed.

His last act reversed the meaning of his life's great failure. The stolen key had once cost House Atreides the Duke's first son. The old captain's final stand preserved the second, and Paul Atreides lived to carry the Atreides name to Arrakis and beyond.
