The Atreides Family Tree: from Agamemnon to Leto II and Beyond

Paul Atreides is a grandson of the Baron Harkonnen, a son-in-law of the Emperor he deposed and the father of a God Emperor. This is the Atreides family generation by generation, with Frank Herbert's novels first and the expanded books marked as such.

By Joe Garratt

The Atreides family tree runs from a claimed descent from the House of Atreus on ancient Earth, through Duke Leto and Paul Atreides, to Paul's son Leto II and the line of Ghanima that the God Emperor bred for 3,500 years. It is not a pure Atreides tree either. Paul's mother is a Harkonnen by blood, his wife is a Corrino princess, and his daughter's children are half Corrino. (Dune; Children of Dune; God Emperor of Dune)

The Atreides family tree in one list#

Frank Herbert's canon first. Expanded-book relatives are marked. (Dune; Children of Dune; God Emperor of Dune)

Ancestry: the House of Atreus and the Agamemnon claim#

In Frank Herbert's books the Atreides trace themselves back to the Greek House of Atreus, the family of the legendary King Agamemnon. Leto II states it outright in his journals: his paternal grandfather was the Atreides, descended from the House of Atreus. Leto, who can reach every ancestor through his inner memories, says he has followed his father's line all the way back to that house. Herbert gives no generations in between. (God Emperor of Dune)

The expanded books fill the gap with a different Agamemnon. There he is a Titan, a human brain in a machine body who ruled worlds before the thinking machines, and the father of Vorian Atreides. Vorian turned on him and joined the Butlerian Jihad, and later books make Willem Atreides, Vorian's descendant, the first Duke of the House. None of this is in Frank Herbert's six novels. (Expanded books: Dune: The Butlerian Jihad; Mentats of Dune)

Paul's grandparents: the Old Duke and the Baron#

Paul's paternal grandfather is known in Dune only as the Old Duke. A showman who fought bulls for his people, he was killed in the ring by a Salusan bull. The bull's head and the Old Duke's portrait hang in the dining hall at Arrakeen, and Thufir Hawat has served three generations of the family, starting with him. Herbert never names him or his wife. (Dune)

The expanded books call him Paulus Atreides and give him a wife, Helena of House Richese, who is blamed for drugging the bull that killed him. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)

Paul's maternal grandfather is Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Jessica was bred by the Bene Gesserit from the Baron's seed, and Paul works this out in a stilltent in the desert after his father's death, realising he is a Harkonnen by blood. Herbert does not name Jessica's mother. In the expanded books she is the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam. (Dune; Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)

That makes the Baron's nephews, Glossu Rabban and Feyd-Rautha, Jessica's cousins, and Paul's first cousins once removed. Strictly they are half-cousins, since their father Abulurd was the Baron's half-brother. Paul kills Feyd in a duel at the end of Dune, and Alia kills the Baron, her own grandfather, with the gom jabbar. (Dune)

Leto I and Jessica#

Duke Leto never married Jessica. She was his bound concubine, which left him free to make a political marriage, and she had been with him sixteen years when the family moved to Arrakis. Her orders from the Sisterhood were to give him only daughters. She gave him a son. (Dune)

Leto died on Arrakis after the traitor Yueh betrayed the household. Jessica lived on for decades, as Reverend Mother of the Fremen, then on Caladan, and later back on Arrakis and Salusa Secundus, where she taught Farad'n. In the expanded books Leto also had an earlier son, Victor, by Kailea Vernius, killed in a plot against his father. (Dune; Children of Dune; Expanded books: Dune: House Harkonnen)

Paul and Alia#

Paul, born on Caladan, is fifteen when Dune opens. He becomes Duke when his father dies, Muad'Dib among the Fremen and Emperor at the end of the book. His full list of names is on every name and title of Paul Atreides. (Dune)

Alia is Paul's only full sibling. Jessica was pregnant with her when she drank the Water of Life, so Alia was born about eight months after the Duke's death already awake, with the memories of her ancestors. She married the restored Duncan Idaho ghola, had no children, and threw herself from a window at the end of Children of Dune after the Baron's memory took control of her. (Dune; Dune Messiah; Children of Dune)

Paul's partner is Chani, daughter of the planetologist Liet-Kynes, whose own father Pardot Kynes began the plan to green Arrakis. His wife is Princess Irulan, eldest daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV, whom he marries to claim the throne. She is his wife in name only and bears him no children. (Dune; Dune (appendix); Dune Messiah)

Paul's children: the first Leto, Leto II and Ghanima#

Paul has two sons named Leto, and this trips people up. The first was born to Chani during the Fremen war in Dune and named after his grandfather. He was killed as a baby when Sardaukar raided the sietches, shortly before the Battle of Arrakeen. (Dune)

Twelve years later, in Dune Messiah, Chani dies giving birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Paul names them Leto and Ghanima. Like Alia, both are pre-born. Leto takes the throne in Children of Dune, covers himself in sandtrout and rules for thousands of years as the God Emperor. (Dune Messiah; Children of Dune)

Leto marries Ghanima, but in name only, since his changed body will never father children. Farad'n Corrino, grandson of Shaddam IV through his daughter Wensicia, becomes the father of Ghanima's children. So the second Corrino link in the tree runs through Farad'n, Irulan's nephew, rather than through Irulan herself. (Children of Dune)

Ghanima's line: Siona and the Atreides breeding legacy#

Every later Atreides comes from Ghanima. Leto II takes over the Bene Gesserit breeding programme and runs his own on her descendants for 3,500 years. By the time of God Emperor of Dune its products include his majordomo Moneo and Moneo's daughter Siona, the first Atreides hidden from prescience. (God Emperor of Dune)

After Leto's death Siona and a Duncan Idaho ghola carry the line on, as he planned. About 1,500 years later, in Heretics of Dune, the Sisterhood is still breeding Atreides genes: the Bashar Miles Teg is a near double of Leto I, and the Reverend Mother Darwi Odrade is Teg's daughter. Sheeana Brugh, the girl who commands the worms on Rakis, turns out under Bene Gesserit analysis to come from the line of Siona and Duncan. (God Emperor of Dune; Heretics of Dune)

Frequently asked questions

Who is Paul Atreides's grandfather?
On his father's side, the Old Duke of Caladan, killed by a bull in the ring; the expanded books name him Paulus. On his mother's side, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, because Lady Jessica is the Baron's secret daughter.
Does Paul Atreides have a sister?
Yes. Alia Atreides, born on Arrakis about eight months after Duke Leto's death, is Paul's younger sister. She later rules as regent for his children.
Who is Paul Atreides's son?
Paul has two sons named Leto. The first, born to Chani in Dune, is killed as a baby in a Sardaukar raid. The second, Leto II, is Ghanima's twin, born in Dune Messiah, and becomes the God Emperor.
Is Feyd-Rautha related to Paul?
Yes. Feyd-Rautha is the Baron Harkonnen's nephew and Jessica is the Baron's daughter, so Feyd is Jessica's cousin and Paul's first cousin once removed.
