Salusan Bull: the beast that killed the Old Duke

The Salusan bull was a ferocious bovine animal native to Salusa Secundus, the harsh world that later served the Imperium as its prison planet. Instantly recognisable by the spines that covered its back, the multiple horns studding its black head, and its faceted eyes, the creature carried two separated brains within its skull, a redundancy that made it exceptionally difficult to stop once it had committed to a charge. Though its homeworld lay far from the ocean world of Caladan, Salusan bulls were kept there in the stables of House Atreides, where Duke Paulus Atreides maintained them for the public bullfighting spectacles he staged for his people. That tradition ended in 10156 AG, when a tampered contest in the Plaza de Toros left the Old Duke dead on the horns of one of his own bulls.

Physiology and origins#

Salusan bulls arose on Salusa Secundus, a world whose wild beasts, extreme temperatures, and broken terrain bred hardiness into everything that survived there. The bull's most prominent features were external: a back covered in spines, and a black head studded with multiple horns rather than the paired set common to ordinary cattle. Its eyes were faceted, giving the animal a wide and alien field of vision that made it hard to deceive with simple movement.

The creature's most dangerous trait, however, was internal. Each Salusan bull possessed two separated brains. In the bullring this redundancy expressed itself as relentlessness. A Salusan bull did not tire or lose focus the way a lesser animal might, and wounds that would drop ordinary livestock did not reliably end its attack. Matadors who faced the beast depended on drugs delivered through barbed banderillas to slow it, because skill alone could not be trusted to outlast a creature that pursued its target with the better part of an hour of unbroken aggression.

The stables of Castle Caladan#

Despite the danger, Salusan bulls were kept on Caladan under House Atreides. Duke Paulus Atreides, a public entertainer at heart, staged occasional bullfighting spectacles for the Caladanian crowds, dancing beyond the reach of the horns in the Plaza de Toros while thousands watched. The bulls themselves were housed at Castle Caladan and tended by Stablemaster Yresk, an old retainer of House Richese who had followed Lady Helena Atreides to Caladan upon her marriage.

Before the fatal contest of 10156 AG, the young swordmaster trainee Duncan Idaho grew concerned about the condition of the bulls and tried to raise the alarm. Yresk silenced him by locking him in the stables before the bullfight began, an act the stablemaster later lied about when questioned. The concerns Duncan had voiced proved well founded.

The last bullfight of Duke Paulus#

The final bullfight of Duke Paulus took place in the Plaza de Toros in 10156 AG, around the same time that Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX died on Kaitain. The Old Duke opened the contest as he always did, playing with the Salusan bull and staying beyond its horns to the delight of the spectators. But when the animal showed no sign of tiring after the better part of an hour, and remained fixed on killing him, Paulus decided to end the fight quickly. Using a trick learned from one of the finest matadors in the Imperium, he let the bull's horns ricochet off his personal shield, disorienting the beast, then drove his banderilla into its head and set the barbed hook into the muscle.

The barb should have delivered a drug to subdue the animal. It did not. Through the treachery of his own wife, Helena, working with House Harkonnen, the tip had been left undrugged. The bull floundered back to its feet and charged. Paulus side stepped, but the animal caught his ceremonial cape on its many horns and tore it to shreds, leaving the Duke with only a second banderilla, wielded like a fencing sword, and a partial shield.

The bull charged again, gathering speed, and Paulus began to suspect sabotage. The beast feinted right, swerved past his jab, and when his barb caught on a knob of its hide without sinking in, the weapon was torn from his grasp. Momentarily unarmed, the Duke scrambled backward and bent to snatch the fallen banderilla. The bull reached him with shocking speed, ducked beneath the partial shield, and rammed its horns deep into his back, breaking through his ribs into his lungs and heart before thrashing him from side to side in front of the horrified crowd.

Aftermath and the mounted head#

Within seconds of the Duke's death, the Mentat Thufir Hawat and the Atreides guards stormed the field and cut the Salusan bull apart with their lasguns, the animal's own momentum scattering the carcass across the arena. It was the last bullfight ever held on Caladan.

The new Duke, Leto Atreides, ordered Hawat to interrogate Stablemaster Yresk over his role in the disaster, and quietly instructed the Mentat not to let the man survive the questioning, fearing what else he might reveal. When Leto later discovered that his own mother had arranged the tampering, he exiled Helena to Caladan's Eastern Continent.

The dead bull itself was granted a strange permanence. Its head was mounted and placed on a wall in Castle Caladan, facing an oil painting of the Old Duke, the laminated bloodstains preserved upon its horns. Throughout the reign of Leto the Just the trophy hung in the Atreides dining hall, first on Caladan and then, when the family took up its fief on Arrakis, in the halls of Arrakeen, where the beast that had killed a Duke of House Atreides watched over the table of his son.
