What Happened to Paul Atreides's Daughter?
Paul's daughter Ghanima survived an assassination plot as a child, married her twin brother Leto II in name only, and had children with Farad'n Corrino that carried the Atreides line on for thousands of years. The films haven't reached her yet.
Paul's daughter, Ghanima Atreides, lived. In Frank Herbert's books she survived a Corrino plot to kill her as a child, married her twin brother Leto II in name only when he took the throne, and had children with Farad'n Corrino. Through those children the Atreides line ran on for thousands of years. (Children of Dune; God Emperor of Dune)
Born in Dune Messiah#
For twelve years after Paul takes the throne, Chani can't conceive, because Princess Irulan has been secretly giving her contraceptives. When Chani finally becomes pregnant, the pregnancy runs too fast and she dies giving birth. Paul had foreseen a daughter but not a son as well, so the twins take him past the edge of his visions. (Dune Messiah)
He names the girl Ghanima, a Fremen word for a spoil of war, and the boy Leto. Then, blind, he walks into the desert as Fremen law asks of the blind. His sister Alia takes charge of the children. (Dune Messiah)
Growing up pre-born#
The twins are pre-born, like Alia. The spice in Chani's body woke them before birth, so they come into the world with full adult minds and the memories of their ancestors, male and female. Ghanima has less of her brother's prescience and less of his drive, and she knows him better than anyone. They are raised by Alia, now regent, and by Irulan. (Children of Dune)
The Bene Gesserit fear the twins will go the way of Alia, possessed by the dead inside them. Ghanima and Leto keep control, even though they watch Alia losing hers. (Children of Dune)
The tiger plot#
In Children of Dune the twins are nine. Wensicia Corrino, daughter of the emperor Paul overthrew, wants the throne for her son Farad'n. She sends the twins fine robes that will draw trained Laza tigers to them in the desert. The twins see it coming and survive. Leto decides to let the world believe he is dead, and Ghanima hypnotises herself into truly believing it, so that no Truthsayer can catch her in a lie. (Children of Dune)
Alia then promises Ghanima in marriage to Farad'n. Ghanima, thinking her brother killed by the Corrinos, agrees and privately plans to kill Farad'n on their wedding night. Stilgar takes her and Irulan into the desert to keep them out of Alia's reach. (Children of Dune)
Leto's return and the marriage#
Leto walks into Alia's court alive. His return breaks Ghanima's self-hypnosis and she remembers the plan. Alia, possessed by the memory of Baron Harkonnen, throws herself from a window, and Leto takes the throne. (Children of Dune)
Leto marries Ghanima. It is a marriage of state, to stop any other house from claiming the throne through her, and it is never consummated: Leto's body is already turning into something that will never father children. Farad'n, renamed Harq al-Ada, becomes Leto's royal scribe and the father of Ghanima's children. (Children of Dune; God Emperor of Dune)
Ghanima's line#
Herbert never shows the rest of Ghanima's life, but God Emperor of Dune, set some 3,500 years later, shows what came of it. Leto uses her children with Farad'n to take over the Bene Gesserit's breeding programme, and Ghanima's descendants include his majordomo Moneo and Moneo's daughter Siona, who leads the attack that kills Leto. Leto also mentions that Ghani and Harq al-Ada lie in his crypt, though they are not his ancestors. (God Emperor of Dune)
The line reaches further still. In Heretics of Dune the Bashar Miles Teg says he is descended from Ghanima. (Heretics of Dune)
Ghanima in the films#
Ghanima is not in Dune: Part One or Part Two, which end long before she is born. Deadline reported in June 2025 that Ida Brooke had been cast as Ghanima in Dune: Part Three, with Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II. Legendary declined to comment at the time. The Part Three teaser opens with Chani asking Paul what they should name a girl, and Paul answering Ghanima. (Leto II and Ghanima casting report; Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
