Paul Atreides' Children: Leto II and Ghanima
Paul Atreides has three children, all with Chani. Their first son, Leto, is killed as a baby in Dune. The twins Leto II and Ghanima are born at the end of Dune Messiah, and Leto II goes on to rule the universe for more than three thousand years. Here is each of them.
Paul Atreides has three children, all with the Fremen woman Chani. Their first son, Leto, is killed as a baby during the war in Dune. Their twins, Leto II and Ghanima, are born at the end of Dune Messiah, and Chani dies giving birth to them. Leto II becomes the God Emperor who rules for thousands of years, and Ghanima's children carry the family line on. (Dune; Dune Messiah; God Emperor of Dune)
Leto: Paul's first son#
Paul's first child is often forgotten because the films leave him out. In Dune, during the years Paul spends as a Fremen leader, Chani bears him a son, and they name him Leto after Paul's murdered father. The novel calls him Leto II, the same name his younger brother will later carry. (Dune)
He doesn't live long. Paul has Chani and the boy hidden in a sietch far to the south, away from the fighting. The Emperor's Sardaukar raid it, and the child is killed. In the same raid Paul's sister Alia is captured and taken to the Emperor, where she kills Baron Harkonnen with the gom jabbar. (Dune)
Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two has no child at all. Paul and Chani's relationship ends the film unresolved. (Dune: Part Two)
How the twins are born in Dune Messiah#
For twelve years after Paul takes the throne, Chani can't conceive again. The reason is Princess Irulan, Paul's wife in name only, who has been secretly feeding Chani contraceptives so that the Corrino line, not a Fremen concubine's, will give the empire its heir. Paul knows and lets it go on, because he has foreseen that Chani will die giving birth. (Dune Messiah)
Chani gets past the contraceptives by changing her diet to one heavy in spice, and becomes pregnant. The pregnancy goes too fast and wears her down. She dies giving birth to twins. (Dune Messiah)
The twins come as a shock to Paul. His prescience had shown him a daughter, never a son. Blind since the stone burner attack, he had been getting about by vision, and the birth takes him past the edge of what he had seen. For a moment he sees through his newborn son's eyes, enough to kill the Tleilaxu Scytale, who was holding the babies as a bargaining chip. Then Paul walks alone into the desert, as Fremen law asks of the blind. (Dune Messiah)
Paul names the girl Ghanima, a Fremen word for something won in battle, a spoil of war. The boy is Leto, the second Leto II. (Dune Messiah)
Leto II and Ghanima as children#
The twins are pre-born, like their aunt Alia. The spice in their mother's body during pregnancy woke them before birth, so they come into the world with the memories of their ancestors. Alia, who rules as regent while they grow up, is losing her own fight with those inner voices, and the twins know it. (Children of Dune)
In Children of Dune, at nine years old, they are already talking to each other like old adults. Wensicia Corrino, Shaddam's daughter, sends trained tigers to kill them in the desert so that her son Farad'n can take the throne. The twins see it coming and survive. Leto lets the world think he is dead, and Ghanima hypnotises herself into believing it too, so that no truthsayer can catch her lying. (Children of Dune)
Leto goes into the deep desert. He covers his body in sandtrout, which give him enormous strength and begin his slow change into a sandworm, and he takes on the Golden Path, the future his father had seen and refused. He also finds Paul, still alive and preaching in the desert as the Preacher. (Children of Dune)
Leto II: the God Emperor#
Leto returns, takes power from Alia, and becomes emperor. Over the following centuries his body turns into that of a giant sandworm with a human face, and in God Emperor of Dune he has ruled for about 3,500 years. He runs the universe as a deliberate tyranny, controlling the spice and taking over the Bene Gesserit's breeding programme, all to force humanity onto a path that ends in its scattering beyond his reach. (God Emperor of Dune)
He dies in an ambush led by Siona, one of his own descendants through Ghanima, whose line he bred so that prescient eyes could not see her. (God Emperor of Dune)
Ghanima: the twin who carries the line#
When Leto takes the throne, he marries his sister. It is a marriage of state only, to keep any other house from claiming the throne through her, and it is never consummated. Ghanima's children are by Farad'n Corrino, the grandson of the emperor Paul overthrew. (Children of Dune; God Emperor of Dune)
Through them, Paul's blood runs on. Leto's majordomo Moneo and Moneo's daughter Siona are both Atreides, descended from Ghanima. (God Emperor of Dune)
Paul's children in the films#
