The Bene Gesserit Breeding Program Explained: Why They Wanted a Kwisatz Haderach

For generations the Bene Gesserit bred the noble houses like livestock, aiming at one man. Here is what they wanted, which bloodlines they used, how Jessica wrecked the plan, and what became of the programme after Paul.

By Joe Garratt

The Bene Gesserit breeding programme was the Sisterhood's plan, run over many generations, to produce the Kwisatz Haderach: a man with the powers of a Reverend Mother and more, who could see into all of his ancestral memory and across time. They bred the noble houses towards him, matching bloodlines through Sisters placed as wives and concubines. In Dune the plan was one generation from success when Lady Jessica disobeyed an order and gave Duke Leto a son. (Dune; Dune (appendix))

What was the Bene Gesserit's ultimate goal?#

The goal was a single person. Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam explains it to Paul on Caladan, after his test with the gom jabbar. The spice trance that makes a Reverend Mother opens the memories of her female ancestors, but there is a place in that inner memory, the male side, that she cannot look into without terror. The Kwisatz Haderach would be a man who could look there. The glossary gives the name's meaning as "the Shortening of the Way" and describes him as a male whose mental powers bridge space and time. (Dune; Dune (appendix))

That is the why. Other Memory is the Sisterhood's great tool, covered in Bene Gesserit powers, and they could only ever reach half of it. A man who could reach all of it and see the future besides would be the most powerful being in the universe. The Sisterhood intended him to be theirs, a Bene Gesserit man on or behind the throne. (Dune)

The bloodlines: Atreides and Harkonnen#

The programme worked by placing trained Sisters with chosen noble lines and steering what children they had, down to the sex of each child, which Bene Gesserit control of the body allows. The two lines that mattered in Dune were House Atreides and House Harkonnen. (Dune)

Lady Jessica was the Harkonnen half, though she didn't know her father's name until it surfaced in the desert. She is the secret daughter of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, bred by the Sisterhood and placed with Duke Leto Atreides I as his concubine. Her orders were to bear him daughters. One of those daughters was to marry a Harkonnen heir, and the son of that match was meant to be the Kwisatz Haderach. It would also have ended the old feud between the two houses. (Dune)

The expanded books add how Jessica was conceived: the Sisterhood blackmailed the Baron into fathering a daughter with Mohiam. Frank Herbert never names Jessica's mother. (Expanded books: Dune: House Atreides)

The Sisterhood kept other candidates on its charts. At the end of Dune Paul recognises Count Hasimir Fenring as one of the near misses, an almost Kwisatz Haderach spoiled by a flaw in the pattern that left him a genetic eunuch. (Dune)

Jessica's disobedience#

Jessica loved Leto, and he wanted a son. She gave him one. Paul was born about fifteen years before Dune opens, and Mohiam's anger at it is the first thing the book shows: she tells Jessica that the Sisterhood could have married an Atreides daughter to the Harkonnen heir and sealed the breach, and she makes plain that Jessica's son has put the whole plan at risk. (Dune)

What Jessica did was move the programme forward a generation without anyone's permission. Paul was the right blood a generation early, raised by a Bene Gesserit mother in the Sisterhood's ways. When he drank the Water of Life in the desert he looked into the place no Reverend Mother could, and became the Kwisatz Haderach. He was also nobody's servant. (Dune)

Feyd-Rautha and Irulan#

With no Atreides daughter, the Sisterhood still wanted the Harkonnen genes. That line ran through the Baron's nephew Feyd-Rautha, the intended father in the original plan. When the Fenrings visit Giedi Prime for Feyd's birthday fight in the arena, Lady Margot Fenring is sent to seduce him and carry his child for the Sisterhood, planting hypnotic phrases in him while she is at it. By the end of the book she has borne him a daughter he knows nothing about. (Dune)

Irulan, Shaddam IV's eldest daughter, had a Bene Gesserit mother and a Bene Gesserit training. Paul killed Feyd in the duel at the end of Dune and took Irulan as his wife in name only, keeping Chani as the woman he loved. (Dune; Dune (appendix))

What happened after Paul#

The Sisterhood didn't give up on the Atreides blood. In Dune Messiah Mohiam joins the conspiracy against Paul because the Bene Gesserit want his bloodline back under their control, and Irulan, still their agent, feeds Chani contraceptives for years so that no heir of hers is born. The same book shows the Tleilaxu claiming they had bred a Kwisatz Haderach of their own. Chani finally dies giving birth to twins, Leto II and Ghanima. (Dune Messiah)

The twins were what the Sisterhood now wanted, and they were also its worst fear. Like Paul's sister Alia they were pre-born, which the Bene Gesserit call Abomination. In Children of Dune Jessica returns to Arrakis partly on the Sisterhood's orders, to test them. Alia had already fallen to the Baron's memory, and the Sisterhood had reason to think the twins could too. (Children of Dune)

Leto II's breeding programme and Siona#

Leto II ended the Bene Gesserit's control for good. He took the throne, married Ghanima in name only and made Farad'n Corrino the father of her children, which joined Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino blood in one line. Then he took the breeding programme for himself and ran it on that line for the 3,500 years of his reign. (Children of Dune; God Emperor of Dune)

His goal was the opposite of the Sisterhood's. They wanted a prescient man they could steer. Leto wanted people no prescient could see, so that no oracle or tyrant could ever track humanity again. In God Emperor of Dune he finds that his majordomo's daughter, Siona Atreides, doesn't appear in his visions at all. She is the result he bred for, and her children will carry the trait. His death sets her line loose. (God Emperor of Dune)

The Bene Gesserit got their programme back after he died. In Heretics of Dune, about 1,500 years on, they are still breeding the Atreides line: the Bashar Miles Teg is a near double of Leto I, and the Reverend Mother Darwi Odrade is his daughter. The full family is mapped in the Atreides family tree. (Heretics of Dune)

Frequently asked questions

What was the Bene Gesserit's ultimate goal?
To breed the Kwisatz Haderach, a man who could see into the male side of ancestral memory that no Reverend Mother can reach, and who could see across time. They meant to control him and, through him, the throne.
Why did the Bene Gesserit want a Kwisatz Haderach?
Their Reverend Mothers can reach the memories of their female ancestors but are terrified of the male side. A male who could look there, and see the future, would give the Sisterhood knowledge and power it could never get on its own.
Who was supposed to be the Kwisatz Haderach?
The son of an Atreides daughter and a Harkonnen, most likely Feyd-Rautha. Jessica was ordered to give Duke Leto a daughter for that match, bore Paul instead, and Paul became the Kwisatz Haderach a generation early.
Did the Bene Gesserit breeding program fail?
It got its result and lost it. Paul was the being they wanted but would not obey them, and his son Leto II took the breeding programme away from them for 3,500 years.
