Bene Gesserit Powers Explained: the Voice, Truthsense, Other Memory and More
Every Bene Gesserit ability from Frank Herbert's novels, what it does, how a Sister learns it and who uses it on the page. None of it is magic: it all comes from training, and one gift comes from a poison.
The Bene Gesserit powers are trained skills, not magic: the Voice, truthsense, total command of the body, a deadly way of fighting, and, for those who survive the spice agony, the memories of their ancestors. Frank Herbert introduces all of them in Dune through Lady Jessica and the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, and the later books push them further. Below is each power, what it does, how it's learned and who uses it. (Dune)
Where the powers come from#
Every Bene Gesserit skill rests on one discipline. The glossary to Dune defines prana as the muscles of the body treated as units for training, and bindu as the nervous system. A Sister learns to command both down to single muscles and nerves, and from that control comes almost everything else. (Dune (appendix))
The order calls this training the Way. Jessica gives it to her son Paul without the Sisterhood's permission, and the novel opens with him already running its drills of mind and body. (Dune)
The Voice#
What it is. The Voice is the order's most famous power. The Dune glossary describes it as training that lets an adept control others just by choosing the tone of her voice. The order it gives is obeyed before the victim can think. (Dune (appendix))
How it's trained. It is built on the same close reading of other people that all Bene Gesserit training teaches. The Sister first registers the person in front of her, then pitches her voice to the shadings that will work on them. It works best on someone with no training, and a trained mind can resist it. (Dune)
Who uses it. Mohiam uses the Voice on Paul in the gom jabbar test to make him put his hand in the box. Paul, trained by Jessica, is learning it himself. In Dune: Prophecy, Valya Harkonnen uses it to order her rival Dorotea to kill herself, and Dorotea does. (Dune; Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Truthsense#
What it is. A Bene Gesserit can tell when someone is lying. A Truthsayer, in the Dune glossary, is a Reverend Mother qualified to enter the truthtrance and detect falsehood, a state reached with the help of a narcotic in which the small signs of a lie become obvious. (Dune (appendix))
How it's trained. Lesser truthsense comes from the order's training in watching faces, breathing and voice. The full truthtrance is a Reverend Mother's skill. (Dune; Dune (appendix))
Who uses it. Mohiam is the Truthsayer of Emperor Shaddam IV, and the Great Houses keep Truthsayers of their own, which is how the order sits at the centre of imperial politics. Dune: Prophecy shows the same arrangement ten thousand years earlier, with the Sisterhood placing Truthsayers such as Kasha Jinjo beside the throne. (Dune; Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Body control and the weirding way#
What it is. Prana-bindu lets a Sister move faster and more precisely than an ordinary fighter can follow. The Fremen call this the weirding way, using the word the Dune glossary defines as pertaining to witchcraft. (Dune (appendix))
How it's trained. Years of drills in single muscles and nerves, the same training behind everything above. (Dune)
Who uses it. Jessica overpowers Stilgar in a moment when his Fremen find her and Paul in the desert, and Stilgar takes them in on condition that she teaches his people. Paul trains the Fedaykin in it. In Children of Dune, Jessica teaches the discipline to Farad'n Corrino. (Dune; Children of Dune)
Control of body chemistry#
What it is. The same control reaches inside the body. A Sister can change a poison into something harmless, and she can decide whether a child she conceives will be a son or a daughter. (Dune)
How it's trained. It grows out of prana-bindu, and it is tested to the limit in the spice agony, where the candidate has to change a poison from the inside or die. (Dune)
Who uses it. Jessica was ordered by the Sisterhood to give Duke Leto a daughter. She chose to give him a son instead, and that son was Paul. Later she changes the Water of Life at Sietch Tabr. (Dune)
The Litany Against Fear#
What it is. The Litany Against Fear is a mental discipline more than a power: a short recitation that keeps the mind clear under terror and pain. Its best known line is "Fear is the mind-killer." (Dune)
How it's trained. Sisters learn it early and recite it in danger. (Dune)
Who uses it. Paul recites it to himself while Mohiam holds the gom jabbar at his neck and his hand burns in the box. Dune: Prophecy shows the idea behind it: Desmond Hart's virus feeds on fear, and Tula saves Valya by teaching her to let the fear pass instead of fighting it. (Dune; Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024)
Other Memory#
What it is. A Reverend Mother can reach the lives of her ancestors as if they were her own past. The later novels call this Other Memory. For a woman it runs down the female line. In the gom jabbar scene Mohiam tells Paul there is a place in memory none of them can look into, and that the one they wait for will. (Dune; Heretics of Dune)
How it's gained. Only by surviving the spice agony: drinking a poison such as the Water of Life and changing it within her body. A dying Reverend Mother can pass her memories on. On Arrakis, the old Fremen Reverend Mother Ramallo passes hers to Jessica in the same moment Jessica changes the Water. (Dune)
Who uses it. Every Reverend Mother, from Mohiam and Jessica to Darwi Odrade in Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune, where the order leans on Other Memory as a record of history lost everywhere else. (Dune; Heretics of Dune; Chapterhouse: Dune)
The danger. A child woken to these memories before birth has no self yet to hold them back. The order calls such a child Abomination. Jessica's daughter Alia is born this way and is finally taken over by the memory of Baron Harkonnen. (Dune; Children of Dune)
Imprinting#
What it is. In the later novels the order trains some Sisters as Imprinters, who use sex and intimacy to bind a person to them. (Heretics of Dune)
Who uses it. Lucilla is sent as an Imprinter for the young Duncan Idaho ghola. Sexual control becomes a battleground in Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune, because the Honored Matres use their own sexual techniques to enslave men, and the Sisterhood studies them through Murbella. (Heretics of Dune; Chapterhouse: Dune)
What the Bene Gesserit can't do#
They can't see the future. The whole breeding programme existed to produce a man who could look into the place in memory Reverend Mothers can't reach and see what's coming: the Kwisatz Haderach. Jessica's choice of a son put him in the world a generation early, out of the order's control. (Dune)
They also work through belief rather than powers. The Missionaria Protectiva planted legends on worlds like Arrakis that a Sister in trouble could use. That's why the Fremen had a prophecy ready for Jessica and Paul. (Dune)
For how the order first learned these skills, see the Dune: Prophecy story guide. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Frequently asked questions
- What powers do the Bene Gesserit have?
- The Voice, truthsense, total control of their own muscles, nerves and body chemistry, a fighting style the Fremen call the weirding way, and for Reverend Mothers, Other Memory, the remembered lives of their ancestors.
- Can the Bene Gesserit see the future?
- No. Prescience is not a Bene Gesserit power. The order bred for thousands of years to produce a man who could see it, the Kwisatz Haderach, and lost control of him when Paul Atreides was born.
- How does the Bene Gesserit Voice work?
- The adept reads a person and then pitches her voice to the exact tones that will make that person obey without thinking. It works on the untrained, and a trained mind can resist it.
- What is Other Memory in Dune?
- It is the store of ancestral lives a Bene Gesserit gains when she survives the spice agony and becomes a Reverend Mother. For a woman it reaches back down her female line.
- Are Bene Gesserit powers magic?
- No. They come from training begun in childhood and, for Other Memory, from surviving a poison. The Fremen call the order's skills weirding because to outsiders they look like witchcraft.
