Reverend Mother in Dune: the Spice Agony and Other Memory
A Reverend Mother is a woman who has survived the spice agony, changing a poison inside her own body and waking to the memories of her female ancestors. The Bene Gesserit use the title for their senior Sisters, and the Fremen use it for the wise women of their sietches.
A Reverend Mother is a woman who has survived the spice agony: she has taken an illuminating poison into her body, changed it from within, and come out with the memories of her female ancestors awake inside her. The glossary printed with Dune defines the title first for the Bene Gesserit and then notes that the Fremen adopted it for their own religious leaders who had reached the same state. (Dune (appendix))
What is a Reverend Mother?#
The glossary to Dune calls a Reverend Mother, originally, a proctor of the Bene Gesserit who has changed an illuminating poison within her body and so raised herself to a higher state of awareness. In the Sisterhood it is the rank above an ordinary trained Sister: Jessica, for all her skill, was not a Reverend Mother when she came to Arrakis. The order's leaders, its Truthsayers and its Mother Superior are drawn from the Reverend Mothers. (Dune (appendix))
The first Reverend Mother anyone meets in the series is Gaius Helen Mohiam, who tests the young Paul Atreides with the gom jabbar on Caladan. She is also the Padishah Emperor's Truthsayer, using her trained perception to tell him when someone lies. (Dune)
The spice agony: how a Reverend Mother is made#
The spice agony is the ordeal itself. The candidate drinks a poison and has to work on it from inside her own body, using the control of her own chemistry that Bene Gesserit training gives her, until it becomes harmless. If she can't, she dies. If she can, the shock opens up the memories carried in her cells. (Dune)
On Arrakis, Jessica went through it in Sietch Tabr after she and Paul joined the Fremen. The old Reverend Mother Ramallo was dying, and her lives had to pass to a successor. Jessica drank the Water, felt the poison take hold, and changed it. In the same moment Ramallo's memories flowed into her, along with the long line of Fremen Reverend Mothers behind Ramallo. (Dune)
The later novels keep the rite at the centre of the Sisterhood, often calling it just the Agony. In Chapterhouse: Dune, the former Honored Matre Murbella goes through it and becomes a Reverend Mother of the order she was once sent to destroy. (Chapterhouse: Dune)
Spice agony vs the Water of Life#
People often mix up the two terms. The Water of Life is the poison, the agony is what happens when you drink it. The glossary defines the Water as the liquid exhalation of a sandworm at the moment it dies from drowning, which a Reverend Mother changes inside her body into a narcotic the whole sietch can share. (Dune (appendix))
So the order runs like this. A small worm is drowned and gives up the Water. A Reverend Mother or candidate drinks it and goes through the spice agony. If she changes it, she becomes a Reverend Mother, and the changed Water is passed among the tribe in the sietch orgy that follows. It was this Fremen rite that made Jessica, and later Paul. (Dune)
Paul's ordeal shows how dangerous it is. Every man who had tried the poison had died. Paul drank the Water of Life anyway, lay near death for three weeks, and woke able to see into the place in memory that no Reverend Mother can reach. That was the mark of the Kwisatz Haderach. (Dune)
Other Memory and the place they cannot look#
What the agony gives is Other Memory: the remembered lives of a Reverend Mother's ancestors, available to her like her own past. For a woman this runs down the female line. In the gom jabbar scene Mohiam tells Paul there is a place none of them can look, and that the one they are waiting for will look there. (Dune)
That memory is a danger as well as a gift. A child woken to it before birth is preborn, and the Bene Gesserit call such a child Abomination, because she has no self of her own yet to hold the crowd of ancestors back. Jessica was pregnant when she changed the Water, and her daughter Alia was born fully awake. Alia's long struggle with the voices inside her, and her possession by the Baron Harkonnen, is the story of Children of Dune. The Sisterhood's verdict on her is covered in the Report on Alia Atreides. (Dune; Children of Dune)
Fremen Reverend Mothers and Sayyadinas#
Among the Fremen the Reverend Mother is the keeper of the tribe's inner life. Below her is the Sayyadina, which the glossary to Dune calls a feminine acolyte in the Fremen religious order. When a Reverend Mother is dying, a successor goes through the agony so that her memories are not lost, and another woman is made Sayyadina at the same time in case the candidate dies. At Jessica's rite that second woman was Chani. (Dune (appendix); Dune)
The Bene Gesserit see Fremen Reverend Mothers as wild ones, made outside their schools. Jessica herself became one, which left her with a foot in both traditions. For the Sisterhood's planting of Fremen religion in the first place, see the Missionaria Protectiva and the Lisan al-Gaib. (Dune)
Famous Reverend Mothers#
The Bene Gesserit side of the list starts with Mohiam in Dune. In Heretics of Dune the order is led by Mother Superior Alma Mavis Taraza, with Darwi Odrade, who succeeds her, and Lucilla among its Reverend Mothers. Odrade then leads the Sisterhood through Chapterhouse: Dune. (Dune; Heretics of Dune; Chapterhouse: Dune)
On the Fremen side the best known are Ramallo of Sietch Tabr and Jessica, who took her place. Jessica kept the title through Paul's reign and was working with the Bene Gesserit again in Children of Dune. For when each of them lived, see the Dune timeline. (Dune; Children of Dune)
