the sietch of Stilgar

Sietch Tabr was a major Fremen community on Arrakis, led by Naib Stilgar. It was the first sietch to shelter Paul and Jessica Atreides after the fall of House Atreides, and it became the foundation of the Arrakis Revolt that launched Muad'Dib's jihad.

By Joe Garratt

Sietch Tabr was a major Fremen sietch on Arrakis, its most famous native leader being the Naib Stilgar. It was the first Fremen community encountered by Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica after their escape from Harkonnen assassins following the fall of House Atreides on the planet. Adopted as their new home, it became the foundation of the Arrakis Revolt, the resistance that took control of the planet and launched the jihad of Muad'Dib.

A Fremen stronghold#

Sietch Tabr was one of the major Fremen communities of Arrakis, housed like all sietches within the rock of the desert and led by a naib. Its most renowned leader was Stilgar, whose authority and standing among the Fremen made the sietch a center of influence in tribal culture and politics. Among its notable places were a briefing room, a hall of rites, the prayer wall, a deathstill where the water of the dead was reclaimed, the sietch school, the windtrap that gathered moisture from the air, and a water basin, along with Stilgar's own quarters.

Refuge and revolt#

After House Atreides fell to the conspiracy of the Harkonnens and the Imperial Sardaukar, Paul and Jessica fled into the deep desert and survived repeated assassination attempts. Sietch Tabr was the first Fremen community to take them in, and it became their adopted home. From this base grew the Arrakis Revolt, the resistance movement that eventually wrested control of the planet and launched Paul's jihad across the known universe once he had taken the Imperial throne as Muad'Dib.

Later history#

Once Paul became Emperor and moved his base of operations to Arrakeen, Sietch Tabr lost some of its newfound authority, but it remained a powerful locale in Fremen culture and politics. As with every Fremen sietch, it was eventually abandoned during the terraforming of Arrakis that turned the desert green, and its exact location passed out of memory for thousands of years. The site was finally entered again by Reverend Mother Darwi Odrade of the Bene Gesserit, shortly before Sietch Tabr was destroyed along with the rest of the planet in the catastrophe that ended Rakis.
