Willem Atreides: the duke who founded the House and died in kanly

Duke Willem Atreides (21 BG to 9 AG) founded House Atreides and became its first representative in the Landsraad League. He was born on Caladan and killed on Salusa Secundus by Gerhard Harkonnen in a declared act of kanly, asking as he died for the feud between the two houses to end.

By Bron

Duke Willem Atreides was the founder of House Atreides and the first man to represent it in the Landsraad League. He was born on Caladan in 21 BG, died on Salusa Secundus in 9 AG, and spent the years between the two dates trying to answer the death of his great-great-great-grandfather Vorian Atreides with a killing of his own.

Who founded House Atreides?#

Willem Atreides founded House Atreides and held its first seat in the Landsraad League, four generations on from Vorian Atreides, whose line ran to Kagin Atreides and then down to Willem and his brother Orry.

The family he headed was small and close. Orry was his brother, Shander his uncle, and Luc a cousin whose branch had settled on Kepler and who came visiting with his own family during the last months of Willem's life. None of them had inherited a great house. Willem built the thing they all then belonged to.

The chamberlain's seat#

Vorian's apparent death was laid at the door of Valya Harkonnen's scheming, and Willem answered it by going after her brother Danvis. The contest for Imperial Chamberlain gave him the ground to do it on, because Danvis wanted the same post.

The candidate list thinned in a way nobody could explain innocently. Every other man in the running appeared to be dead, and the blame settled on Willem. Then Danvis appeared to be dead as well, and the Imperial court struck Willem from a newly drawn list of candidates. The office went to neither of them.

How did Willem Atreides die?#

Danvis Harkonnen was not dead, and after his reappearance the Harkonnen cousin Gerhard killed Willem on Salusa Secundus in a formally declared act of kanly.

What Willem said at the end was plain enough. He wanted the feud with the Harkonnens finished. Luc Atreides, standing there to hear it, chose to understand the words differently and told the family that they would end the feud by killing every Harkonnen there was. That reading outlived Willem by ten thousand years.
