Serena Butler

High Priestess and martyr of the Jihad

Serena Butler was a Salusan noblewoman whose enslavement by the thinking machines and the murder of her infant son helped ignite the Butlerian Jihad. As its High Priestess she became a living symbol of the war, and her staged death on Corrin made her one of its Three Martyrs.

Saint Serena Butler was a Salusan politician who became one of the chief instigators of the Butlerian Jihad, serving as the first Interim Viceroy of the League of Nobles and later as the High Priestess of the crusade against the thinking machines. The daughter of Viceroy Manion Butler, she was captured during the conquest of Giedi Prime and enslaved on Earth in the household of the robot Erasmus, where the murder of her infant son helped touch off the slave rebellion. After her staged death on Corrin she was venerated as one of the Jihad's Three Martyrs, and her memory remained a rallying cry for the rest of the war.

Early life on Salusa Secundus#

Born into a noble family on Salusa Secundus, Serena was the daughter of Viceroy Manion Butler and his wife Livia, and seemed destined to follow her father into politics. She was ambitious and intelligent, and her views proved controversial among the nobles of the League of Nobles. She argued that the Unallied Planets and their largely pacifist Zensunni and Zenshiite inhabitants should be welcomed into the League through compassion and aid, and she stood firmly against the slavery practiced widely within the League. While pursuing her career she carried on a romance with the rising military commander Xavier Harkonnen. She led relief missions to worlds such as Caladan and to the closed-off Tlulax, delivering medical supplies.

Capture and enslavement on Earth#

Serena's life changed after the thinking machine invasion of Giedi Prime. Angered by the League's inaction, she covertly organized a military task force and traveled to the planet in an attempt to wrest it from Omnius. Though the operation ultimately succeeded, Serena herself was captured and taken to Earth, where she was assigned to the household of the robot Erasmus. On her arrival she learned she was pregnant with Xavier Harkonnen's child, while her family and Xavier concluded she had died in the assault.

For nearly two years Serena lived in Erasmus's hillside villa, tending his gardens and serving as a stubborn subject for his studies of humanity. She gave birth to a son she named Manion after her father, and during this time she came to know the trustee Vorian Atreides, whose curiosity she helped awaken. Troubled by the child's presence, Erasmus had Serena sterilized and then killed the infant by throwing him from a balcony. Her fury at the murder drove her to destroy a guard robot with her bare hands, an act that inspired the simmering slave population. Led by Iblis Ginjo, the slaves revolted, and Serena escaped into space with Vorian and Ginjo aboard the Dream Voyager.

High Priestess of the Jihad#

Returned to Salusa Secundus, Serena turned her grief and rage against Omnius and helped drive the League to escalate the war into the full Butlerian Jihad. She took the title of Priestess of the Jihad, but her role was gradually diminished by the cunning Iblis Ginjo, who rose to the title of Grand Patriarch. For many years she was little more than a figurehead, spending much of her time in the City of Introspection and consulting the Cogitor Kwyna, while giving inspirational speeches and blessings to the soldiers. She and her dead son Manion became icons on the banners of the Jihad. After surviving repeated assassination attempts, many secretly arranged by Ginjo, she was placed under the guard of the Seraphim Order, which also allowed Ginjo to watch her more closely. When the war grew stagnant she reasserted herself, claiming the position of Head of the Jihad Council and refusing Ginjo's proposal of a political marriage. She also persuaded Aurelius Venport to offer his new spacefolder technology to the Jihad.

Martyrdom on Corrin#

When the Ivory Tower Cogitors proposed a truce between Omnius and the League, Serena volunteered as the League's ambassador to Corrin. Officially she was to broker peace, but secretly she and Ginjo had arranged a suicidal confrontation that would create another martyr. Traveling to Corrin with four Seraphim, she met Omnius in the Central Spire and defiantly demanded the release of all human slaves, knowing it would provoke him. Erasmus, having studied human history, recognized from her smile that she intended to martyr herself and halted the execution Omnius ordered. The Seraphim Niriem then carried out Ginjo's contingency, killing Serena herself to ensure her martyrdom.

Legacy#

Ginjo circulated fabricated images of Serena's gruesome execution by the machines, using a body cloned by the Tlulaxa from cells taken during her earlier visit to their world. The images and a planted corpse stoked outrage throughout the League, and her death, together with that of her child, became a powerful and enduring call to arms. Her great-grand-niece Rayna Butler, having survived the Omnius Scourge and claiming a vision of Serena, founded the Cult of Serena, a movement that worshipped her and crusaded to destroy thinking machines, carrying her memory through to the final Battle of Corrin.
