Xavier Harkonnen
Primero of the Army of the Jihad
Xavier Harkonnen was a respected military commander of the Butlerian Jihad whose killing of the corrupt Grand Patriarch Iblis Ginjo tainted his family name for centuries, even as his bloodline went on to found House Corrino.
Primero Xavier Harkonnen was a prominent and highly respected military commander in the years leading up to and during the Butlerian Jihad. His decision to kill the corrupt Grand Patriarch Iblis Ginjo was distorted into an act of treachery that tainted the Harkonnen name for centuries, even though his own bloodline would go on to found House Corrino and rule humanity for nearly ten thousand years.
Early life#
Xavier was born to the wealthy and prominent aristocrats Ulf Harkonnen and Katarina Harkonnen within the League of Nobles. When he was six his parents were killed in an assault by thinking machines, and he was afterward adopted by Emil Tantor and Lucille Tantor.
Military career#
Recognized early as a promising commander, Xavier received a military commission at the age of nineteen. He soon distinguished himself in the First Battle of Zimia by taking command of the shell-shocked Salusan Militia and leading them to a famous victory over a group of cymeks led by Agamemnon. During the battle his lungs were permanently damaged and were later replaced with Tlulaxa-supplied organs, and he was promoted to the rank of segundo.
He courted Serena Butler, daughter of Viceroy Manion Butler Senior, by whom Serena conceived the martyr Manion the Innocent, whom she bore as a slave of the robot Erasmus on Earth. After Serena's disappearance from the League, Xavier married her sister Octa Butler, becoming the patron of both the Butler and Harkonnen families. The couple bore three daughters, the youngest of whom became the genesis of House Corrino. During the Battle of Earth, Xavier was credited with the contentious decision to bombard the planet with atomics, which destroyed the Omnius Prime there but also obliterated all life on Earth.
In the Jihad that followed he became a Primero in the Army of the Jihad alongside Vorian Atreides, and the two became firm friends despite their contrasting styles of command. He led many victories, including the Battle of IV Anbus and the Liberation of Ix.
The killing of Iblis Ginjo#
After Serena's death, Xavier accompanied Grand Patriarch Iblis Ginjo on an embassy to invite the Tlulaxa homeworld into the League of Nobles. During the visit he was contacted by Hondu Crehg, a former Tercero of the Battle of IV Anbus now held captive as an organ repository for the Tlulaxa. Crehg revealed the truth of the organ farms that supplied the League with replacement organs, and that some attacks blamed on the machines were in fact captures by the Tlulaxa under Ginjo's direction. Caught in the organ repository room by Ginjo, who openly explained his motives, Xavier realized he would not be allowed to reach Salusa Secundus alive.
Xavier confided his plan to his adjutant, Quinto Paolo. After Paolo departed the return ship aboard a spacefolder kindjal carrying a message to Vorian Atreides, Xavier set the transport on a fixed course toward the Thalim star, killing himself to free humanity from the criminal Patriarch in 164 BG.
Legacy#
Through the machinations of Ginjo's political allies and his widow Camie Boro, the truth was distorted: Iblis was revered as a martyr and Xavier was marked as a traitor. Only Vorian Atreides and Paolo knew the true account, and Vorian judged that any attempt to clear Xavier's name would only divide humanity. As a result the Harkonnen name was tarnished and Xavier's descendants took the surname Butler. His grandson Abulurd later resurrected the Harkonnen name after learning the truth from Vorian, to the dismay of his family and the League, but after a falling out Vorian refused all further help and Abulurd was exiled, condemned to bear the shameful name, so that Xavier's reputation was never healed.
In an ironic turn, the man remembered as one of history's great traitors became the direct ancestor of every Padishah Emperor to bear the surname Corrino, as well as of the Atreides emperors Paul and Leto II and the regent Alia, making his bloodline the longest serving line of absolute monarchs in human history.
