Liberation of Giedi Prime

the retaking of a machine world

The Liberation of Giedi Prime was the battle that returned the planet to the League of Nobles after its occupation by the thinking machines, won by a combined assault and the sacrifice of a Sorceress of Rossak.

The Liberation of Giedi Prime was the battle that returned Giedi Prime to the League of Nobles after its occupation by the thinking machines of Omnius, fought during the Butlerian Jihad. It was made possible by a covert mission to repair the planet's shield stations, and was decided by the sacrifice of a Sorceress of Rossak who struck down the Titan Barbarossa.

The strike mission#

Frustrated by the League of Nobles' failure to act, Serena Butler covertly organized a military task force to repair the Holtzman shield stations of occupied Giedi Prime, timed to coincide with a planned League assault to take the planet from Omnius. She chose the veteran Ort Wibsen to lead the strike force, alongside Brigit Paterson and the Giedi emissary Pinquer Jibb. Wibsen secured a blockade runner, and Paterson gathered detailed documents on the planet and its subsidiary scrambler-shield generators, equipping the ship with the best experimental materials she could scavenge.

Leaving Salusa Secundus in secret, the team infiltrated Giedi Prime's atmosphere and reached the north polar island where the secondary shield-transmitting station stood. Over the following week they wired and linked the substations. Serena's absence was noticed on Salusa, and Xavier Harkonnen received word of her mission days after her departure. With no other choice, the League prepared for the attack, supplied with portable electronic scramblers against the robotic soldiers and supported by the Sorceresses of Rossak.

The battle#

When the League Armada arrived, the repairs were nearly complete. Omnius launched a counterattack as the machine fleet rose, but Paterson activated the shields, neutralizing the gelcircuitry of the ships in mid-air so that they fell and crashed, while the orbiting fleet was trapped outside. At the north pole the blockade runner was detected. Wibsen drew off the machine ships and made a last stand, while cymeks broke into the runner and killed Jibb; the Titan Barbarossa spared Serena Butler to deliver her to Erasmus.

The Sorceress Heoma volunteered for a suicide mission, knowing her psychic attack would kill every human within its blast radius as well as the enemy. Protected by soldiers and joined by survivors of the Giedi Prime Home Guard, she reached the palace of Omnius and confronted both the machine mind and Barbarossa. Heoma and Barbarossa perished together in the shockwave, and though Omnius was not destroyed, the newly installed copy was left vulnerable. The Armada under Xavier Harkonnen finished it off and recaptured the planet.

Aftermath#

As the League fleet held the planet, the update ship Dream Voyager approached to deliver an update to the now-destroyed Giedi-Omnius, crewed in part by Vorian Atreides. Xavier Harkonnen attacked, but Vorian claimed the ship had been stolen by humans, won a brief ceasefire, then returned fire and fled back toward Earth. It was the first meeting of the two men. In the wake of the battle Serena Butler was declared dead, though in truth she had been taken captive to serve Erasmus, and the Titans, enraged at the loss of Barbarossa, began a reprisal against the Sorceresses of Rossak.
