First Battle of Zimia
the cymek assault on Salusa Secundus
The First Battle of Zimia was an assault by Agamemnon's robotic forces in 203 BG against Salusa Secundus, the capital of the League of Nobles. It was the first concentrated machine aggression after a century of cold war, and the defense of the city's shield generators made the reputation of Xavier Harkonnen.
The First Battle of Zimia was an assault by the forces of the Titan Agamemnon in 203 BG against Salusa Secundus, the capital world of the League of Nobles. It was the first concentrated robotic aggression after a century of cold war, and it was timed to strike while the nobles were gathered in the planet's Hall of Parliament. The defense of the city, mounted around its shield generators by the young officer Xavier Harkonnen, became one of the early proving grounds of the long war against the thinking machines.
Prelude#
The robotic fleet, a force of armored warships led by Agamemnon aboard his pyramid-shaped vessel, was ten times the size and power of any Omnius had previously sent against the League of Nobles. The attackers swiftly overwhelmed the crews of the human sentry vessels, vaporizing the diffuse inner perimeter of defenses; only a few distant scouts managed to transmit a warning to the ground.
Because of the Holtzman shield network protecting the world, Agamemnon and a small vanguard of cymeks pressed forward to disrupt the defense grid and open the way for the main force. The neo-cymek Xerxes and three companions shut down the subsidiary systems of their pyramid ships so that their armored dropcarriages fell unguided into the atmosphere. They crash-landed on the outskirts of the prime city of Zimia, where the main shield-generating towers stood, followed by Agamemnon and twenty-eight ships in all.
The defense of the generators#
The Salusan Militia responded at once. Warship commanders called their crews to battle-ready status, the shields were raised, and the Hall of Parliament was evacuated. Tercero Xavier Harkonnen was dispatched from the military control center with a portable com-station to give reports, and from that vantage he saw the cymeks hatching from the pyramid ships and understood why the shields had failed against them. His position outside the building saved his life: a dropcarriage fell and leveled the control center along with his comrades, including Primero Vannibal Meach, and Harkonnen took temporary command of the militia.
Tracing the route of the cymeks as they burned through the city, Harkonnen realized they were making for the shield generators while the robotic fleet waited in orbit. Faced with a grave choice, he ordered the militia to fall back and defend the generators, the single most vital target, leaving the rest of Zimia undefended against fire and poisonous gas. The troops mounted a defense around the latticework of transmitting towers while the cymeks tried to draw them off by ravaging the city. Riding a kindjal, Harkonnen commanded a concentrated assault against each cymek in turn. Six of the war-forms were destroyed and Xerxes barely escaped in a launch pod carrying his preservation canister, after which the remaining cymeks abandoned their warrior bodies and blasted their canisters into space to be retrieved by the fleet.
Aftermath#
The battle put the League of Nobles on red alert and cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Holtzman Shields, prompting the savant Tio Holtzman to begin a desperate search for an improvement. Harkonnen was promoted to Segundo but suffered serious trauma from inhaling toxic gas; his lungs and olfactory organs had to be replaced, leaving him with only a small fraction of his sense of smell and taste for the rest of his life. Omnius answered the defeat with an assault on Giedi Prime.
