Aerilon
Food Basket of the Colonies
Aerilon was a temperate agricultural world in the Cyrannus star system and one of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. Known as the "Food Basket of the Colonies", it was a rugged, working-class farming world and the birthplace of Gaius Baltar.
Aerilon, also rendered Aerelon and known as the "Food Basket of the Colonies", was a temperate world in the Cyrannus star system, orbiting the star Helios Delta. It was one of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, named after the Aries tribe who had resided on Kobol, though its citizens may not have been affiliated with that tribe. A vast farming world of rolling hills and prairies, Aerilon supplied much of the food of the Twelve Worlds and was the birthplace of Gaius Baltar.
Settlement and geography#
Aerilon shared an orbit with Canceron and Hestia, located at the gas giant's L4 Lagrange point. It was colonized at some point after the settlement of Gemenon and the other colonies. Much of the planet's landmass lay within the temperate zone, and its mild climate and moderate precipitation made it ideal for agriculture. Covered in rolling hills and prairies, Aerilon hosted many farms and livestock ranches and became known as the food basket of the Twelve Worlds. Outside the capital city of Gaoth and the settlement of Cuffle's Breath Wash, the birthplace of Gaius Baltar, no other large settlements are known to have existed.
Culture and society#
Aerilon was noted for its vast fields, prairies and plains. The land was not especially fertile and demanded extensive, labor-intensive cultivation to produce its colossal food stocks. As a result the population had a reputation for being rugged, working-class and no-nonsense.
Much of the economy was geared toward agriculture, and a great deal of the population lived on farmland. Many Aerilonians were poor and relatively uneducated, regarded as hard workers and plain speakers. The belief in self-reliance was deeply ingrained, the local planetary government did not support or establish welfare programs for those in need, and political dissent was not tolerated.
Economy and education#
Beyond farming, the planet's other major export was minerals, with substantial mines located in several places. The University of Aerilon and Promethea A&M were the two centers for higher learning on the colony, the former teaching the arts and the latter teaching business skills. How many graduates were expected to earn a living on Aerilon is not known, though some Aerilonians, including Doctor Gaius Baltar, migrated to other colonies for work.
