Adriatic
Defender-class survivor of the Fleet
Adriatic was a decommissioned Defender-class warship that escaped the Fall of the Twelve Colonies with the Fleet. One of the few armed civilian vessels, it was destroyed during the journey to the Algae planet roughly two years after the Fall.
Adriatic was a Defender-class ship that escaped the Fall of the Twelve Colonies with the refugee fleet led by the Battlestar Galactica. A decommissioned First Cylon War warship operating in civilian hands by the time of the Fall, it was one of the few ships in the convoy still armed with ship-to-ship missiles, and it played a role in the rebellion that briefly split the Fleet. It was destroyed roughly two years after the Fall during the dangerous passage to the Algae planet.
History#
The Adriatic was a decommissioned warship that had served the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. At some point during its roughly fifty-year history the ship was decommissioned and transferred to an unknown civilian entity, which operated it through the interwar period up to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. During the initial Cylon attack, the Adriatic, like other civilian ships, was ordered to exit the shipping lanes and wait for further orders. It later joined the Laura Roslin-led refugee fleet and rendezvoused with Galactica at Ragnar Anchorage.
Rebellion in the Fleet#
During the rebellion that divided the Fleet, Adriatic's crew supported President Roslin and jumped to Kobol. As one of the few vessels armed with ship-to-ship missiles, the Adriatic provided defense for the splinter group, and it was almost ordered to shoot down Kara Thrace's Heavy Raider.
The passage and destruction#
During the food shortage that gripped the Fleet, the ships had to travel through a dense star cluster to reach the Algae planet, the only available food source nearby. Adriatic's personnel were transferred to Galactica, and a skeleton crew piloted the ship alongside a Raptor crewed by Lieutenant Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza. The two vessels were separated from each other during the passage, and the Adriatic was ultimately destroyed.
Design#
The Adriatic measured roughly 554 meters in length, 201 meters in width, and 119 meters in height. For defense it carried point-defense missiles and thick armor plating, a legacy of its origins as a warship. It was driven by eight sublight engines arranged in four clusters, supported by maneuvering thrusters, and it carried a faster-than-light drive.
