Function#
The Crast acted on a single target at a time, projecting a focused pulse of repulsive force directed by the wearer's will. The intensity was variable. A wearer could apply enough pressure to break a grip, or enough to launch an opponent across a chamber at lethal speed. The mask was not a form of telekinesis. It could not draw a target toward the wearer, only push it away.
Applied to the ground or another solid surface, the Crast permitted limited flight. By repelling the surface beneath them, the wearer could lift into the air and travel in short bursts. Sustained flight required constant pulses and depleted the wearer's stamina rapidly, making the technique terrain-dependent and unsuited to open sky or vacuum.
The Crast could only affect one target at a time. It offered no defense against swarms or coordinated attacks, and its effect was instantaneous rather than continuous, producing impact rather than lasting restraint.

KrikaKrikaThe cautious Mistika leader who survived by never taking unnecessary risks, until Teridax's Plan forced his hand.'s role within the Brotherhood was that of an infiltrator and scout rather than a frontline combatant. The Crast suited that role, granting mobility and the means to disengage from melee at speed. Against GorastGorastA Makuta defined by rage and ruthlessness, Gorast conquered the Visorak and became Teridax's most devoted enforcer., whose combat style relied on close engagement, the mask's single-target repulsion was effective. Design#
The Crast carried a pale gray and red color scheme. Its shape was blockier than masks such as the HauHauThe Mask of Shielding that protected Toa from harm they saw coming, but left them vulnerable to ambush and mental assault. or MiruKanohi MiruThe Miru keeps you from falling but doesn't make you fly. Toa Lewa proved there's a difference., with a forward projection and heavy brow ridges that gave it a battering profile. The design did not conform to the symmetrical patterns common among Toa-grade masks. It sat heavily on the wearer's face, projecting weight and aggression rather than balance.
The mask's appearance reflected the Brotherhood of MakutaMakuta (Species)Shadowy Antidermis beings and the Brotherhood's elite, Makuta commanded darkness and shaped the Matoran Universe's fate.'s broader aesthetic during the period of its use, when armor and equipment trended toward severity and visible threat.
Place within the Brotherhood#
The Crast was a tool suited to the internal politics of the Brotherhood. It permitted non-lethal application of force, useful where outright assassination of a fellow MakutaMakuta (Species)Shadowy Antidermis beings and the Brotherhood's elite, Makuta commanded darkness and shaped the Matoran Universe's fate. carried higher consequences than a sharp warning. By repelling an opponent rather than wounding them, the wearer could assert dominance in a confrontation without committing to open rebellion.
This restraint mattered during the period of Brotherhood infighting that preceded the Destiny WarThe Destiny WarThe open conflict between the Order of Mata Nui and the Brotherhood of Makuta that ended fifty thousand years of operational secrecy and broke the Brotherhood's last assault on Metru Nui..
