Kanohi Miru

The Miru keeps you from falling but doesn't make you fly. Toa Lewa proved there's a difference.

Miru3

Miru isn't a flying mask. It's a floating mask. That distinction matters because it's why Toa LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui. had to get creative. The KanohiKanohiMasks that grant powers and sustain life, they're the most vital artifact in the Matoran Universe. Miru was the Mask of Levitation, one of the six great masks worn by the Toa Mata, and its power lets the wearer float and glide without ever falling. But it provides no thrust forward.

The Power and Its Limits#

The Miru keeps you from falling. That's the entire function of the mask. A wearer floats suspended without expending effort, but they don't move forward, accelerate, or steer through air on the mask's power alone. That makes the Miru fundamentally different from the Kadin, which is specifically a mask of powered flight. The functional gap shaped how the Miru was used across Bionicle history, making it less celebrated than other KanohiKanohiMasks that grant powers and sustain life, they're the most vital artifact in the Matoran Universe. despite its practical value. It's useful for Toa confronting aerial threats or navigating dangerous drops, but it's not a weapon or a mobility tool in the way other great masks are.

LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui.'s Exception#

Toa LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui. turned the Miru into something it isn't designed to be. Because LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui. is a Toa of AirToa of AirWielders of the Element of Air, typically transformed from Le-Matoran, tasked with protecting the Matoran Universe., he could combine the mask's levitation with his elemental command of wind currents. The result was actual flight. In BIONICLEBIONICLE: Matoran AdventuresA 2002 GBA platformer where you play as one of six Matoran fighting Bohrok across Mata Nui's islands. Chronicles 1: Tale of the ToaTale of the ToaThe chronicle of how six Toa arrived on the island of Mata Nui, recovered their Kanohi, formed the Toa Kaita, and confronted the Shadow Toa beneath Mangaia., the narration describes how an initial gust provided quick lift, but LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui. then continued floating upward through his own power.

TahuTahu, Toa of FireTahu served as Toa Mata, Toa Nuva, and Toa Mistika of Fire, leading his team from the first landing on Mata Nui to the destruction of the Rahkshi army on Bara Magna., the Toa of FireToa of FireThe Elemental protectors of the Matoran, most often rising from Ta-Matoran to command the power of fire., achieved a similar effect using heated air to create lift. The technique required deliberate coordination between his fire powers and the mask, and it never achieved LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui.'s level of sustained, controlled flight. Theoretically, other Toa of AirToa of AirWielders of the Element of Air, typically transformed from Le-Matoran, tasked with protecting the Matoran Universe. or Fire could replicate these results if they matched LewaLewaToa of Air, member of the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, whose career was marked by repeated possession, body theft, and aerial campaigns from Le-Wahi to Karda Nui.'s or TahuTahu, Toa of FireTahu served as Toa Mata, Toa Nuva, and Toa Mistika of Fire, leading his team from the first landing on Mata Nui to the destruction of the Rahkshi army on Bara Magna.'s mastery of their elements, but canon names only those two as successful practitioners. The Miru remains a levitation mask for everyone else.
